yes it is. My 3 year old has a model of sun and planets and can recite them. It's really cute ... Earth is Earf, Venus is Beanus, Uranus is Earnest, and and Pluto is his favorite to say probably because he knows he is saying it right...hell yes, its a planet.

What do we care? In a million years we'll all be dead and Pluto will still be there.

A major news story here in Norcal.

"What are teachers going to say to their students? What about the text books? How will parents explain this to their kids?"

Serious. These were posed as real life or death questions on the areas leading news radio station (KGO) today.

here's a more recent story about it.
personally, i'll never think of it as anything but a planet.
if we all decide it's a planet, does that make us dissidents?

"I'm embarrassed for astronomy. Less than 5 percent of the world's astronomers voted," said Alan Stern, leader of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto and a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute.

I'm a scientist but I'm willing to bargain. We'll stop calling Pluto a planet when people stop calling spiders insects.
From a scientific aspect, Jupiter and Saturn are too big to be called mere planets. They should have their own nomenclature. :wag:

Hooray for dissidents!

A civil war between Plutonian fundamentalists and Charon-ite insurgents is imminent.

Can someone send Jimmy Carter?

Doesn't matter to me what we call it -- I just think we need to blow it up. Mankind hasn't blown up any really cool stuff lately...

Our Inner Planets and Gas Giants were formed from cosmic material within our Solar System. They're our planets. They are of our atoms. Then Pluto wandered along and camped on the border. Refusing to adopt the same orbital direction as our other planets. Making frequent incursions into our territory without so much as filing an alien visa application. This is intolerable. Yet 95 percent of the astronomy community couldn't care less. The parallels are obvious.

I've killed men and I've heard them dying and I've watched them dying, and there's nothing glorious about it, nothing poetic. You say you're willing to die for love but you know nothing about dying and you know nothing about love!
