Couldn't they just grow babies and therefore replenish the supply? I'm wondering if I missed something...

I'm going to need to watch it to refresh my memory, but if it is anything like the plot point in the Blade series which required the harvesting of captive humans, then the cause would be that someone didn't think things through carefully enough.
