From a gameplay perspective, I can see your point.

BUT, from a storytelling perspective, I do like the idea that the way that this concept is understated but...think of how much more you can do with the augmentations than you can do without. You're more than human and it shows.

I think they could have done more...like, there's no AR or crosshair or anything in the opening, but imagine if there had been no regenerating HEALTH either. It'd only show to the people who did get shot, but it'd hammer home just how much better your abilities get when you're augmented.

I dunno, I'm just rambling here.

*sigh* I've been trying to get out of gaming, so the release of HR has been really hard on me. Loved it more than Half-Life and the whole Unreal series. But maybe I'll view a walkthrough of it on Youtube.

Yeah, I've been trying to avoid gaming because it is a huge sinkhole of time. However I did adore the original and heard so much good stuff about it, and well, I had some old games to trade and a load of loyalty points....It just fell into my bag, really!

Well that's the good things about game, if you play them in moderation then some of them can take a really long time to beat.
(<<Is still working on VtM:B and PS:T, and don't even get him started on the Spellforce series)

Well played a couple of hours last night and was mostly loving it. Not convinced by the RPG mechanics, levels are actually just upgrade points for augs. Something that can also be found or bought. Shouldn't just be able to buy your levels..., Oversimplification I think.

Other than that I'm loving it, has very much the feel of the original despite the completely different plot, location etc. Even in the first mission and first 'free-roam' area I can see quite a few choices and consequences which is cool. Early days on it but I'm hopeful.

Not just bought but also found.

However, if you look at everything, about half of your points will come from finding stuff/buying them, the other half from leveling.

It's still a better explanation for why your augmentations have to be keyed on one after the other than the Other M explanation for powerups...

I wish there were more ways to modify your character, as far as your augments go. Some of the skills are also really pointless, and don't really do a lot to enhance the way the game is played.

Like swimming! And equipment use!

Honestly, though, I'd prefer if the "line of sight" augmentation to paint it onto your vision, rather than onto your radar.

After watching my friend's hacker/stealth specialist deal with the first boss (and by 'deal with' I mean 'dieover and over until he gets very lucky') I can only conclude that Penny Arcade has, once more, hit it right on the nose: http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/09/02

I was a hacker/stealth specialist and I just used the butt loads of mines that were lying around in the room that you fight him in.

Ah, my dude had basically only put points into hacking, but on the third try I chucked an EMP grenade at him and then shot him in the face about six times point blank with the sniper rifle I'd been uselessly toting about for hours (I'm trying not to kill anyone.) He was dead in about fifteen seconds.

Man, the boss fights were a real misstep in the game design, I think.

You should have been able to hack into a computer somewhere and learn their killswitch phrases and just blow them up that way.

Ahhh, good old Herman. He went 'splodey on every one of my play-throughs of the original. :D

He never did get his "hedgun".

Since I can't play HR, I'm watching a Let's Play series on Youtube. Not quite the same. :(

Boss fights are immensely lame design in pretty much any game, but especially so in any RPG where you can get through the rest of the game without combat skills; Bloodlines annoyed the heck out of me when it degenerated into a tedious boss-fest near the end after I'd spent 80% of the game sneaking and persuading.

I think "bosses" are just there to help players feel like they're accomplishing a milestone of some sort.

That's a good point. They exist as a challenge so that the player feels like they've accomplished something.

That said, the same can be accomplished without forcing the player through one avenue of choice. In Thief 1 and 2, you never ran into the Big Monster What Needed To Be Stabbed. Actually, that's a lie. you did run into those, but you beat them by doing what Garrett did best: stealth.

Point being, if you spend the first quarter of the game learning how to be the best stealther/hacker in the universe, it's awfully aggravating for the game to switch modes on you.

I enjoy davidr64yt's series', as he has a similar taste in games to me, and shuts up during important parts (cinematics, dialogue, etc.), but he hasn't done a HR series yet. I watched the first of J2JonJeremy's HR videos and it was pretty good. Good enough that I'll probably watch the rest. (Both do their vids in HD, too)

The other difficulty is finding ones that aren't done by squeaky-voiced teens. *Shudder* :D

It's always rather comical to hear trash talk done by adolescents who haven't really learned how to curse yet, especially in pvp games. Of course, being old and treacherous, I've found how to use this very much to my advantage.

"Kiddo, I can't hear you very well. Is your mic working? Hmm. Still not hearing you, but I gather it's something about my mother? Type it, if you could."

<kid stops to type>

<I lean out and snipe him in the face>

"What? You stopped moving. Better luck next time, kid."

 That's the reason I no longer watch videos with commentators. The moment I hear someone speak up, I immediately start searching for a different one.

I have to check out this davidr64yt, though, I don't recall coming across his walk-through's yet.

The stungun pwns.

Seriously, for anyone having difficulties with bosses just stunlock them with a taser until they die. You don't even need to shoot them with a gun, they'll still bleed to death regardless.

Curious: Is there actually a good narrative of "Jensen" or the player struggling with his enhancements? I get that impression from the commercial's whole "I never asked for this . . ." line.

This games looks impressive and completely beyond my sad gaming abilities. I'd still like to try it,though!
