Wait a minute. We've stated that we are willing to sit down with Iran to talk about our differences, but we're not willing to go to a conference (because it is anticipated to be anti-Israeli in purpose) and stand up and say we think your document needs work.

why? What might the motivation or reasoning be?

the 2001 conference became ludicrously one-sided and basically an anti-israel bash-fest.

I think there's a difference between sitting down one on one with a hostile country in order to resolve problems and attending a conference where the parameters that frame the discussion are ones you believe biased.

You wouldn't expect Palestinians to attend a conference where the agenda was, "How anti-semitism has caused the conflict in the ME." And would the US attend a conference where the topic of discussion was how US imperialism has created Arab dictatorships?

We also did not attend Iran's "Jews Invented the Holocaust As a Publicity Stunt" conference, either.

For those interested in the history of the conference, what went on in the preparatory sessions etc
http://www.eyeontheun.org/durban.asp

EDIT: Incidently, the Dyrban I conference happened just a few days prior to 9/11. It wasn't just anti-Israel hate-fest, it was generally anti-West (though the focus of the gov panel was on anti-israeli and anti-semitic discussions). The NGO forum was even worse. It dropped any pretense of even being anti-Israel (I mean people were handing out copies of Protocols of the Elders of Zion, for G-d's sake). US delegation lead by Colin Powell walked out of the conference.

I applaud the United States' decision to boycott this conference.

Racism should not be fought. Racism is an ideology -- to fight it is, by definition, to attempt indoctrination and thought control.

Racial discrimination? Absolutely, drive it from the Earth with swords and flame. Economic inequality caused by past racism? Yeah, that's a good target for state action, too -- but that really aplies to any economic inequality. But racism itself? Nobody has the right to try and "fight" racism.

The subtext in that highlights document is terrifying. It's subtle, but I think there's a strong case for most of it.

"...a victim-oriented approach to problems of racism..." "...urges governments to provide effective remedies, recourse, redress and compensatory measures to victims..."
That's about reparations, IMO, with a side dose of payback.

"Assigning the primary responsibility of combating racism [...] and related intolerance to States..." That's going to go great with the ideals of open forums and a free society.

"It calls on States to adopt policies and programmes to counter incitement to racial hatred in the media, including on the Internet. It calls for the collection of disaggregated data, as well as additional research, as the basis for targeted actions."
I'm sure civil libertarians, free speech activists and the EFF will love that. Read the second sentence carefully, three or four times.

"...recognizes the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the right to an independent state." The subtext of this statement being in this document is that the reason it hasn't happened is because of Israeli and American racism, which I think is utter bullshit. I also think the idea that every ethnicity should get an independent state is bullshit as well -- I've never believed in self-determination, and I sincerely don't think that makes me a racist. Just the opposite -- if we're all supposed to be brothers, why draw more lines in the sand?

I'm not saying Palestine shouldn't be an independent state, but it's because of the way the Israelis are treating them -- not because of any "inalienable right" an ethnicity has to its own state.

EDIT: I'm not saying an independent Palestine is the answer, or that Palestinians are entitled. I don't have an answer. I didn't think as much about this last sentence as the rest of the post, and I didn't mean it to sound as accusatory as it does (that Israelis treat Palestinians badly enough that separate nations are necessary to fix it -- I'm not endorsing Israel's actions, either). I wish I hadn't posted that, but I did, and I won't delete it because it would be dishonest debate. Whatever. I'm tired.

"Specific recommendations are formulated to combat discrimination against Africans and persons of African descent, Asians and persons of Asian descent, indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees, minorities, the Roma and other groups."
Racism only flows in one direction. Everybody knows that, right? (This is just after the victim-oriented approach bit, too!)

"The DDPA recalls that the Holocaust must never be forgotten." Gee, I could have sworn there was more than one -- but I guess only the one that gets the big Hollywood movies matters. No mention of Armenians whatsoever, or of the fact that Africans are conducting genocide against other Africans right now. But blacks and Muslims are our designated victims here, so we can't really bring up Darfur...

"...the participation of a wide variety of actors, including civil society, non-governmental organizations and youth in the struggle against racism..." Innocuous enough in and of itself, but "struggle" is a very significant word in the writings of revolutionary Marxists, hardline socialists and communists. Its use here rings warning bells for me, as does the specific mention of "youth" and NGOs. It sounds like the UN is on the verge of giving the rubber stamp of approval to ANSWER and ACORN.

In utter seriousness, I think I'll sit down and cry if that happens. It's sick and tragic, and the UN shouldn't be associating with that kind of fanatical, belligerant and yes, racist, rabble.

The entire thing is fraught with silliness. One of the "affirmations" in it is this (my boldface):
We declare that all human beings are born free, equal in dignity and rights and have the potential to contribute constructively to the development and well-being of their societies. Any doctrine of racial superiority is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust and dangerous, and must be rejected along with theories which attempt to determine the existence of separate human races;
Later, there is this:
We recognize that people of African descent have for centuries been victims of racism, racial discrimination and enslavement and of the denial by history of many of their rights, and assert that they should be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and should not suffer discrimination of any kind. Recognition should therefore be given to their rights to culture and their own identity; to participate freely and in equal conditions in political, social, economic and cultural life; to development in the context of their own aspirations and customs; to keep, maintain and foster their own forms of organization, their mode of life, culture, traditions and religious expressions; to maintain and use their own languages; to the protection of their traditional knowledge and their cultural and artistic heritage; to the use, enjoyment and conservation of the natural renewable resources of their habitat and to active participation in the design, implementation and development of educational systems and programmes, including those of a specific and characteristic nature; and where applicable to their ancestrally inhabited land;
Now, that's all about EXPLICITLY DEFINING a specific race--in this case "people of African descent"--which the previous bit just claimed was something that needs to be rejected as a matter of course.

It's an exercise in intellectual banter and--imo--a waste of time.

Amazingly, this conference begins on Hitler's birthday. It is also amazing that this evening (something that happens every 19 years) Israel commemorates the Holocaust day (in Jewish tradition every event starts on the evening of the previous day). This is a pretty amazing coincidence (I say this with all sincerity and not sarcastically).

Poland is out.
UK will attend. France said that if there is a sign of anti-semitism, they will pull out. I guess, having Ahmedinijad as a keytone speaker doesn't qualify *shrug*

it might be a waste of time for people of the dominate race, but it's clearly not considered a waste of time for the rest of the world.

This must be a mistranslation, as it makes no sense.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a value in standing up and being counted, publicly standing up and saying "no".
Unless you are Alan Dershowitz
Federal agents in Geneva on Sunday escorted Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz away from the Geneva hotel where Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz were meeting, after he declared plans to challenge the Iranian leader about his views on the Holocaust and Israel.

EDIT: But in all seriousness, I think this mass withdrawal of western nations sends a pretty strong message.

EDIT: Look at it from another angle. What message is sent if US with its new shining multikateralism and embrace of UN comes to this conference and manages to change exactly nothing?

It makes perfect sense, actually. It's saying that "race" is a misnomer, insofar as you can't actually define people--scientifically--in that way. We're all one race.

And that's great. If this assumption was maintained throughout the paper, I think it would at least be consistent. Unfortunately--as I noted with another bit--"race" is actually used to define people in the paper, for purposes of group rights and the like. Obviously, the various conclusions are inconsistent.

Yeah, because we all know that Obama is a part of a dominate race. Clearly.
We'll see how many times those caring for "non-dominant" races will mention Darfur, Congo, Sri Lanka, Tibet and the Kurds during this conference.

Clearly, this is something US just had to be a part of
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3703901,00.html
Dozens of western delegates participating in the UN racism conference in Geneva walked out of the forum as an act of protest during the keynote speech delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The delegates rose in unison as the Iranian president began attacking Israel as a racist nation. Ahmadinejad accused Israel of being the "most cruel and racist regime."

In a rambling speech, Ahmadinejad pointed the finger at the United States, Europe and Israel and said they were destabilizing the entire world.

P.S. Good for Jordanina delegates walking out together with the western representatives. Shame on UN Secretary General.

I think Obama not attending is a particularly clear and appropriate condemnation of this spin/hatefest masquerading as an anti-discrimination event.
