Based on the 60-mins segment I just watched, I (duck-duck-go'ed) data brokers and was not surprised to find that some have already been warned about their practices. Here's a list:

The ten companies receiving the warning letters from the FTC include:
Two companies that appeared to offer “pre-screened” lists of consumers for use in making firm offers of credit: ConsumerBase and ResponseMakers;

Two companies that appeared to offer consumer information for use in making insurance decisions: Brokers Data and US Data Corporation; and

Six companies that appeared to offer consumer information for employment purposes: Crimcheck.com, 4Nannies, U.S. Information Search, People Search Now, Case Breakers, and USA People Search.

The Federal Trade Commission is probing whether some of these practices violate the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which regulates how private companies can use personal information. Individuals are supposed to know when data reports affect their eligibility for insurance, credit or employment, and they are supposed to have the opportunity to correct errors.

Good thing (?!) I'm too poor and hopelessly behind the tech curve to be of any interest to them . . . I hope. Discuss.
