Query about Publishers

I'm a retired educator who has published in professional journals and academic subject-related chapters in books. Publishing for the general public is new to me. A friend who is a published author pointed me to this forum. I'm an experienced technology user, but am already overwhelmed at the breadth and depth of this particular forum.

I've recently completed my memoirs and am looking for a publisher. I've already tried some traditional publishers and had no success. So, I'm looking at self-publishers.

My apologies in advance if the answer to my question appears somewhere else in this forum.

Does anyone have experience with either Llumina or Aventine?

Thanks for any tips anyone may have.

Deb

Welcome, Deb. Best of luck with your book. I'm new, too, and still finding my own way around, but I'm betting these fine folks will steer you right. :)

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.

We have a forum for Self-Publishing located here. And if you want to check out the reputations of publishers/agents then visit the Bewares and Background check forum.

Welcome.

Just take it slow and easy for now. You can find an answer to most questions about writing and publishing here (or at least an honest debate about them), but it will be easier if you just get to know us first.

Welcome, Deb. For your publishers, check the Bewares, Recommendations and Background Check thread here and search for them. You can also check them out on Preditors and Editors. Bravo for doing your homework before you start!

Glad you made it here!

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome

I appreciate all the greetings and suggestions.

I spent hours browsing yesterday-- my eyes still ache.

I've read the Newbie Guide, Beware and Self-publishing posts and even some of the posts for comments on works in progress.

I did find one negative comment about Llumina, which concerns me greatly. I've sent a personal message to the poster, but heard nothing back yet. Llumina was not listed in the Beware section.

I'm also considering Aventine Press and did not find any negative comments, nor was it listed in the Beware posts.

I may just have to take the plunge and see what happens.

Again, Thanks.

Deb, here's the thread for Aventine Press

If there is no thread for Llumina, you can start one.

If there is no thread for Llumina, you can start one.

Just to be clear, this is fine to do even if you don't have personal experience with Llumina yet. It's okay to start a thread asking about others' experiences, even if you have nothing but questions at this point.

You cannot start threads in the SYW ("show your work," i.e., sections where you solicit critiques of your posted writing) until you have at least 50 posts. You can start them elsewhere now, though, and this is a great place to start.
