I got a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, too. They were on sale at my store for 1.99, cheaper with my discount. Couldn't pass it up. :D

Hope everyone had a great weekend. :)

So I found out today that I could teach at Uni with a PhD - no need for an Education Degree! Woo!

Of course, I'm getting way ahead of myself... But yeah, I was curious, so I asked.

According to the lecturer I spoke to, I should have no problems getting into an Honours year after my degree. :)

They're razor sharp, nf!

Cliff, in the UK you need a PhD to go the full academic route, i.e. post-doc research eventually leading to a permanent lecturer's position (assoc. professor in the US, as I understand it).

You can work as a teaching fellow, though. That means you don't carry out research, but just teach. And for that, you don't need a PhD.

Not sure how it works in Oz.

What's with the honours thing as well? In the UK, pretty much all degrees peeps register on are honours degrees. It's possible to graduate without honours, but it's a route that people are shoved onto if they're failing.

Does it work differently in Oz with that too? I thought our higher education systems were fairly similar.

Erm, well Honours is an optional 4th year. Some degrees you have to enrol in Honours right from the start, which adds pressure, but the Bachelor of Arts it's optional.

The lecturer said he had an Honours, a Masters and a PhD, and that a PhD was pretty well what you needed to teach at Uni.

I have no idea how long a Masters will take... Pretty sure the average time for a PhD is 3 years (on top of all previous study), but that you *can* finish early if you're really focussed.

I have an inkling that I could be a tutor with, say, Honours or Masters, but to be a lecturer would require a PhD.
