Alotta Old School Stuff for me- bands and artists--

Sinatra, Bennett, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Trane, Beatles, Stones, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Love the melodic compositions of Burt Bacharach, I like Dylan- I know many don't. Steely Dan- Didn't do much, but what they did is great. I like the Eagles- remind me of Dan but the West Coast version. I like Tom Petty a lot. Sheryl Crow's "Globe Sessions" is a classic album for me. Led was an amazing band- with Page and Plant- so many, so much music, I listen a lot- what helps me reconnect to a good place. I'm into Sirius Radio these days- some great stuff- especially like Deep Tracks, a station that plays more obscure stuff from the Classic Rock guys/gals. Petty and Dylan have their own shows. Their taste, as you might expect is transcendent.

... agreed. Great instrumentals, along with the singing. One of these days I've got to pick up their albums so I can listen to their other, not-as-famous, stuff.

When I was a kid, my father had a contact with a record label and got any album, on any label, free! We had rows and rows of LP's in our basement, all stamped- PROMOTION NOT FOR SALE. He was a big jazz guy so while my friends were listening to rock 'n roll, I was nose deep into jazz. My favorites right away were Miles and Trane. Just about wore out Trane's Plays for Lovers. His interpretation of Time After Time, I can still hum along with his improvisations. To me, what makes jazz guys great is when it's working, even for a line or two, they're creating stuff right on the spot that many times, is better than the original composition.

... Trane is awesome. I never get tired of listening to him. Giant Steps and Niama are two of my two favorites. I also love the free-jazz stuff he did towards the end. Yep. Improvisation is a vital ingredient. You're lucky to have had that treasure trove of records. I got into jazz from a college radio station I listened to and also from Looney Tunes. There are a fair number of jazz soundtracks to the cartoons, since many were made in the 40s and 50s :-)

We like a lot of the same bands, it seems. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica are all bands I adore. (I'm actually wearing a Nightwish T-shirt right now, funnily enough.)

Those are all bands I got into after posting last in here, which is why I hadn't mentioned them before. Cradle Of Filth remains a top pick of mine. (I assume you know, and don't need me to tell you, that Sarah Jezabel Deva was guest vocalist with Cradle for a long time.)

I've only heard a little of Xandria, but I may have to check them out some more.
