I have to write a chicken clucking in several instances as dialog in a story. I have been offered differing opinions and can't decide whether to go with the traditional "cluck" "cluck" or a more lighthearted phonetic spelling.
Could some of you offer a few options?

Thanks!

I'd go with phonetic...it's ALWAYS good to be fresh. Especially when you're talking about chicken. :D

Bok bok!

:)
Have you ever sat and listened to a chicken? It is fascinating! Really! They make all kinds of neat little noises. Almost like they have a thick vocabulary.

What are your chickens? Hens, roosters, pullets, chicks?

If hens, before or after laying? Then, there're day noises and night noises...

If I remember right, soft "clucks" seems to happen around chicks and before laying and general strutting around. After laying, hens give a more triumphant sound with several notes in between which can vary from hen to hen.

"Bok, boooks" are general contentment sounds when scratching.

Roosters crow and bok.

This is all for free range chickens. All bets are off for caged chickens.

Thanks Grump.
Actually it was an El Salvadorean free range chicken that landed on my shoulder while I was talking. I was in a mountain top village. No scratching, no eggs , lotsa poop on my shoulder. It was mostly soft clucks.
