I'm auditioning for a short-term music program, and they require all applicants to sing one song, even if they are auditioning for an instrumental spot.

The problem is, I can't sing! I can sort of carry a tune, but my voice sounds wispy. So, any suggestions for a rock or pop song that a non-singing female can do without embarrassing herself too much? Thanks!

You might try something by Sarah McLachlan. She has a soft voice. Or a Stevie Nicks song. Maybe leather and Lace or Gypsy. There was an old Monkees song called Daydream Believer that takes a soft voice. Or the Beatles' Long and Winding Road. It's one of my all-time favorites. In My Life, maybe? Short and sweet.

Williebee, you know we're getting old when Whiter Shade of Pale comes in an elevator version. :D

oh lord, yes. and zeppelin.

Hey, meow? along with stevie nicks, you might look at suzanne vega... or better yet, rickie lee jones' rendition of "My Funny Valentine." Awesome version, with a light voice.

That's not the direction I would go. You need to have a compelling voice and to be a real singer to carry of a tune like Ice Cream

I'd suggest a song that either is a sort of talking type, like Bye Bye Blackbird, or a Beatles tune that people will be forgiving toward.

OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here. I think I'm now truly insane, but after talking with one of the school folks and learning more about why they require vocal auditions for everyone, I've made my decision.

I think I'm going to sing "Tempted" by Squeeze.

And play the drum part at the same time.

Seriously.

I'm nuts.

Excellent choice! That song is one that always makes me stop and listen.

Thanks! It has a simple groove that just feels good. I've always loved the song.

Of course, when I sing it, the song's going to go from "stop and listen" to "stop, please." :D
