Last Friday I decided I was curious enough to sign up for that Statcounter - the free service that tracks your hits on blogs and web pages. At first I wasn't gonna do it. I worried that finding out my blog and web page were getting NO hits would be . . .well, a hit to my ego.

But on Friday I did it anyway.

Turns out I'm getting hits. A lot more than I would have expected.

But the strangest thing just happened - Statcounter gives interesting stats that show you where people came FROM, and I followed one of them to an internet board. It's a site that points people in the direction of free fiction on the 'net and gives reviews of the work.

I'm blowed away. I kinda needed that little boost today. Then I figured I'd brag encourage people to sign up for that Statcounter thingie. It's free, and shows you some fun stats.

Of course, I'm now way too terrified to follow another link, just in case they say something I don't want to see :D

I have a hit tracker on my blog but it's only for the last ten. I've had some strange combinations on google that have taken people to my blog...boggles the mind the word combinations people come up with...

I have blogpatrol and yeah, it gives you the details on the last 25 people. but okay, what's scary? the search results that led people to your site, as in the key words they typed in. and can I say, people type some freaky stuff into search engines.

sure. that freaky stuff led them to my site. I know.

my favorite? babysitter caught going through panty drawer. yeah. that was a proud moment.

sometimes, you can have TMI, you know?

I have a few tracking things, and it's true, seeing your name somewhere else does give you a boost even if it is a right-wing nutjob calling you the 'crazy socialist from Sydney' :D

I have Statcounter and I love it! I'm always amazed when I look at where people 'came from'. I've been pleasantly surprised for the most part. Occasionaly I've found a few nasty responses to my blog - not a good feeling but at the same time, I try to keep in mind that, for the most part, all traffic is good traffic. If my articles have made someone think about the issue enough to do that, then it's a good thing, even if it doesn't feel that way at first!

I've had Statcounter for a loooooong time. I wrote a post once on the stuff people Google that lands them at my blog. Also have a place in my sidebar for the most often googled phrases by non-writers. I've watched an ear infection go around the world a couple times. People in Taiwan and India know about Voodoo Village. Lots of people come looking for National Good-Looking Day (but they miss "Laugh, damn it," which is funnier). People still want to know who Miss Snark really is, what a southerner is, and who's a "joker, a smoker, a midnight toker." A couple more that pop up with regularity are "grown daughter spanked," and "sex kitten." Alrighty then.

I have StatCounter as well and occasionally post about where people come from and the search terms they use. I've gotten hits from places I'd never expect, like the Office for Veteran Affairs in NYC and the US Patent and Trademark Office out of DC. The porny searches that for some reason landed on my blog have been from the UK and also Yemen and the UAE.

I keep a few stat counters on my blog, too, and I love the interesting things I find. It's fun to go through....although, um, going through that sort of thing prevents me from blogging more like I should, heh.

site meter is my favorite, but I don't have on on my blog. have one on my website though.

I do have google analytics on everything ( both websites and blog) but I like the detail of site meter (the free version, they also have a paid one) because I can see where they came from...
