There was some intended humor in putting that in all caps.
And with my response. Just trying to lighten the air a little. Your face is trying to smile in your avatar picture. Give it a little more grin...

Cool. Here's the thing you need to know about me - I don't like being accused of something I didn't do. It riled me. So when you said I was being rude when I wasn't, it really made me mad.

It's all just a big misunderstanding based on assumptions.

14 point? Maybe her editor has really bad eyesight.

I have Geneva on my PC, but only available in my Adobe Suite programs, it seems. You can download & install almost any font off the net.

I'm finding more & more that I really like even writing in Courier, though I do write it in font size 10. I used to place more emphasis on how things look, and using such a generic font helps me to just think about the words themselves & stop obsessing about whether the font is representing the style of writing, gag gag. But every one is different!

Also, I would be a little cautious about advice like this from someone with an established agent & publisher, because she has a relationship with the editor & they may have worked something out that is particular to that editor. For someone seeking representation & first-time publishing, I would be very careful to just follow the standard.

Agreed, and several people have echoed that advice. However, her intended audience is writers learning about the business, and she is giving directions on how to format a manuscript. So, it ends up being bad advice for anyone who reads her book and uses Geneva 14 point.

And like I said, it was a note posted on a sample manuscript in the book. So, it may be something an editor put in. However, the author is ultimately responsible for what's in the book, and the sample manuscript is specifically designed to teach format (it has other notes about double spacing and margins).

I'll answer your question: I have no idea why any established writer would recommend a 14 pt font for submissions. She's either giving bad advice (don't believe everything you read) or you've misread it.

Advice should always begin with "Follow publishers' guidelines" no matter what. After that, use the most readable font (which is Times New Roman, you know, like newspapers) or a monospace font (is that the term?), like Courier.

She never talks about what font to use, but in the sample manuscript, there is a note that says to use Geneva 14 point.

Just to clarify, by "note," do you mean a photocopied sticky note? Or a handwritten note in the margin of the sample manuscript page? Or was it printed in a sidebar, completely separate from the sample?

Yeah, but I forgot to make it bigger. All you had to do was appear, Caro...

Anyone who has to rely on those viagra crutches known as exclamation points can't be too good with the font, Ray.
