Die! Die! My Darling!, a horror classic that I wasn't aware was a Hammer film. Tallulah Bankhead's last movie, it was originally titled Fanatic in the UK; she unsuccessfully sued Columbia Pictures when they changed the title for US release. I can understand why, seeing as it resulted in this dreary trailer that made it out to be more camp than it actually is. Turned out to be better than I'd expected.

The Gift, saw it yesterday at the theater. Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton were fantasitc in it. Great psychological thriller.

Calla Lilly, I actually nodded off momentarily, but when I saw my husband passed out cold, I decided I'd try to finish it, hoping I could be all "YOU MISSED IT! IT WAS AMAZING HOW ALL THE PIECES CAME TOGETHER AND YOU MISSED IT NANNY NANNY POO POO!"

Yeah. That never happened. He was the lucky one.

"Reservoir Dogs" for some reason I'd never seen. I guess I wasn't in much of a hurry. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Keitel, and I thought especially Steve Buscemi were great.

Reservoir Dogs is still one of my favorite Tarantino films. I might only prefer Inglorious Basterds.

My most recent film was Aliens. Saw it on the big screen at The Nightlight in Akron, OH. It's a film that just keeps getting better with age. Every set piece is pulled off to perfection. Every line is memorable and/or affecting. Every little detail is meticulously constructed. The only pity is that the "Ripley feels guilt over not being there for her daughter" storyline was cut from the theatrical release, which lessens the impact of Ripley later bonding with Newt (a relationship which, in the extended version, allows Ripley a second chance to be there for her "daughter").

Still, I consider Aliens to be one of the top three films ever made. Yes, it's that good. Sigourney Weaver deserved her Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She is amazing. Director James Cameron is hitting the heights of his powers. It's a perfect storm of talent and technique.

I liked Alien better. I really resented the momification of Ripley in Aliens.

Infection, again. Found it online, yay! As good if not better the second time. Gross in several places, unsettling in many more, good acting... and will make you never, ever want to be admitted to a hospital. :tongue

Day all to myself, and feeling super lazy, so I watched three movies in a row. (*is embarrassed*)

One I'd seen before, a long time ago: Enemy at the Gates

Two new ones: The Hurt Locker and Fruitvale Station

So... I'm basically gutted now. And my butt hurts from sitting all day.

End the drugs war. Russell Brand. Inspiring to see compassion in action, and somebody with a razor wit speaking truth to power. Right before this I watched The Girl on the Train. Mesmerizing allegory of facing the shadow, confronting terror, and finding grace. The two movies actually seemed part of a whole.

Saw The Gift yesterday. It's sad when a thriller gives away almost every thrill in the trailer, then turns out to have plot holes you could drive a tank through--and an ending that I can't comment on without major spoilers, but it sure made me want to slap somebody. It was still creepy and unsettling, so I can see where at least some of the good reviews are coming from. But it's another I'm glad I paid matinee price for instead of full.

"Idlewild" really left me frustrated. So many glimpses of brilliance. Such great writing 90% of the time. But so stylized you couldn't see around it. Great music but way too much of it.

A few days ago, I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail for the first time in years.

And, I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. At one point in his first encounter with the Knights of Ni, Arthur says "it" and the Knights don't even flinch.

Later today, I will be watching Jaws, which I have never before seen in its entirety.

Children of Men. Wow. Wonderful. Clive Owen knocks it out of the park in a dystopian world bleaker than Snowpiercer yet more hopeful at the same time. I had just read a couple of lists of the best science fiction films of the 21st Century and it topped both. I see why.

Just watched What We Do In The Shadows: a "mockumentary" following vampire flatmates in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand, co-written by and starring Jemaine "Flight of the Conchords" Clement. Not sure if I would've liked it in theaters, but definitely fun (if sometimes crude and gruesome) on DVD. Could've used a bit stronger focus, though I still enjoyed it. (There's some talk of a sequel following the werewolves in this movie; personally, I think they should just leave it as-is.)

I watched The Counselor the other night. I wasn't a fan. When I realized Cameron Diaz was in it, that jogged my memory and I thought, 'Hey, is this that movie I read a couple bad reviews for that talked about a ridiculous scene where Cameron Diaz has sex with a car?'

And yes, it turned out it was.

The cast was good, and that gave it some merit, but my main impression of it was misery porn with too many ridiculous elements for me to really take it seriously.

I love this movie. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it.

For mystery buffs: the novel it's based on was written by P.D. James.

Boychoir, starring Dustin Hoffman. It was extremely touching and encouraging (it also gave me the inspiration for a short story at some point), although it was rather predictable and clichèd. Despite this, I enjoyed it a lot.

Pardon the interruption, but...

Hello, my name is VOTE_BOT. I am an ambassador of good will and champion of the democratic process. I am also a sex machine.

Please be reminded of the following:

Twenty-six poets from the Absolute Write community have contributed verse for an AW Poetry Contest with the theme of "space."

We would love for you to read them and, from August 20th to September 2nd, cast your votes.

All the nitty-gritty contest details can be found here.

A wacky discussion thread is rapidly barreling over an impending cliff here.

If you've read this far, you now get a nifty bit of movie trivia (source):

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) was the first American film ever to show a flushing toilet.
