Just watched Quarantine. This thing scared the pants off of me, held me down and put them back on, then scared them off of me again. Now I'll have to seek out [REC].

Vietnamese movie 'The White Silk Dress.'

In the middle, it reminded me of 'The Bicycle Thief' - poor people forced into all sorts of unpleasant situations. By the end, political propaganda took over though. On the whole, still glad I watched it.

Un Chien Andalou by Luis Buñuel.

Great film. Also check out Le Sang d'un Poete if you like Surrealist films.

Last film I saw in theaters was Milk. Incredible film-- Sean Penn and Dustin Lance Black deserved their Oscars.

Last film I saw at home was Robert Downey Sr.'s Hugo Pool. Alyssa Milano, Sean Penn (again, a great and heart-breaking performance), Malcom McDowell and Robert Downey Jr. -- a wonderful cast, solid, bizarre black comedy. If you like your films weirder, Downey Sr.'s infamous Greaser's Palace is the way to go.

Damn, Greaser's Palace is one of those films I have always wanted to watch... I mean, a western Jesus allegory where the Holy Ghost is actually a guy under a sheet...

Haha, yeah, and the church ("Greaser") is a constipated old man?
It's hard to find, but trust me, it's worth it.

Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet. Still the best cinematic Shakespeare.

Just saw Slumdog Millionaire. It definitely lived up to the hype, at least for me :) Normally I don't really care about what movie critics think; often their opinions don't match mine at all. But I was surprised how much I enjoyed the movie.

Watchmen. I'll give it a B+. Not a perfect film, definitely not The Dark Knight but it does what it does and should please the fanboys and fangirls. As for the general public, it's probably going to be a hit or miss depending on your taste in scifi/fantasy comic book movies. One thing for sure... I felt exhausted coming out of the theater. This film tired me out.

Watchman, midnight show last Thursday/Friday.

It was better than I expected, especially since I knew nothing of the graphic novel that spawned it. I'm becoming convinced that Zach Synder is a director I can trust to give me my money's worth.

Hope he doesn't blow that anywhen soon. It's so disappointing when that happens.

Push.

Like a movie version of Heroes with different characters and shot entirely in Hong Kong. Left me cold really. I'm now probably even less likely to go and see Watchmen because I feel it could be more of the same. Special effects and supernatural powerpeople.
At least, Slumdog Millionaire is finally coming out this weekend so I have something to look forward to.

You Shoot, I Shoot. My husband picks some strange things on Netflix, and this was no disappointment as far as strange goes. It's an old(ish) Japanese movie about an aspiring film director currently stuck working as an assistant in the porn industry. He is able to make his mark when he teams up with a professional hitman whose clients want to see the deaths of the people whom they hire him to murder. When the hitman finds he can't film and kill simultaneously, he involves his friend, and together they make quite a "killing" with their new project...

I'd say this one is mildly entertaining, if not a little disturbing, but that seems to be the case with most of the films in this genre my husband has found... I really need to get out and see a recent movie!

Coraline. This reminded me of a cross between The Triplets of Belleville/Vue and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Good move. Cute and original characters.

Watchmen has nothing to do with supernatural powers (only one of the heroes has actual "super powers" the rest are more akin to Batman, with skills and toys). It is nothing at all like PUSH. However there are some nice special effects in it. I won't say if you'll like it or not, reviews are very heavily divided, but it's based on a comic book that totally subverted the comic book genre. It's dark, very gory, and complex. Here's my synopsis of it for my review:

Set in 1985, Watchmen gives us an alternate reality where superheroes existed and have changed the course of history. None of these caped crusaders have any actual powers, they are more akin to Batman, with suits and skills. We learn that over time they were banned from practicing said skills, and now they all go about their lives in their respective ways. The political climate is charged. Nixon is still president, and the Americans have one thing standing between them and nuclear war with the Soviets. And it ain’t fear. It’s blue. There’s only one superhero in this movie with special powers and he is Dr. Manhattan, a scientist who was vaporized by accident (isn’t that always the way?) and reappeared as a glowing blue mass of energy. He takes human shape of course, but is he human? Even he doesn’t know. But at least, as they say in the film, “The superman exists, and he’s American.”

While this backstory is being established through drips and drabs throughout the movie, the central plot is much more straightforward, a murder mystery. One of the original superheroes from back in the 1940’s, the Comedian, is murdered. Slowly the younger set of superheroes from the 70s join forces to investigate, they include Adrian Viedt aka Ozymandias, the “smartest man in the world” and self made millionaire, Rorschach, a masked vigilante who never gave up the hero game, Dan Drieberg aka Night Owl II, a paunchy man reaching middle age who’s optimism for the future is hidden behind a complacent resignation, and Laurie Jupiter aka Silk Spectre II, Dr. Manhattan’s girlfriend, dealing with the burden of her mother’s desires for her to become as big a superhero as she was in the 40’s, and her own concerns with her relationship with Dr. Manhattan.

There's more to it of course, but that's the setup and as you can see, not at all like PUSH or films of its ilk.

I'm done now. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread . . .

I finally got around to Slumdog Millionaire.

Great experience, touching love story, great soundtrack, interesting structure.

I noticed they crammed everything about India in there: call centers, beggars and gangsters, trains and tuktuks, religious riots, the Taj Mahal, violent police, the celebrity cult, the new real estate projects and the new cars, and of course Bollywood.

The only bit where my suspension of disbelief went wrong, was when they jumped from the kids living on the trains to guiding tourists around the Taj Mahal. Where did they learn enough English if they never went to school?

Conclusion: great fun movie, though Benjamin Button is still my favorite this year. And I'm planning to buy the Slumdog soundtrack.

I watched The Waitress on some cable channel.

I really liked it, but I had a couple of issues. One is the similarities between this movie and the movie/series Alice (Doesn't Live Here Anymore). In both Alice and The Waitress there are three waitresses--one who's mouthy, another mousey, and the main character, a woman who wants to start over. Also, it takes place in a diner. (Mel's Diner, Joe's Pies Diner) Cal is the boss who yells at them a lot (as Mel does in Alice).

Another thought I had was about the ending. A mean, controlling, abusive man would not give up easily if his wife tried to leave him. He just wouldn't. He'd go after her, he'd try to bring her back to him, or he might even kill her. I know this movie was mainly a comedy, but there was some drama there, too. I just don't know if the ending was really believable.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I was watching Lie to Me on TV and was sure the woman playing the psychiatrist had played one of the schoolgirls in the movie. Got out my copy and watched. Yes it was her, forty years earlier. Pamela Franklin

I'm guessing about three quarters of Slum Dog Millionaire. Didn't woo me. If anything, I thought young Jamal (was that his name?) was so adorable to watch, he may have been the best part of the movie for me.

Also Mr. Brooks. That was good.
