Rammstein - Sonne.

Oh man, I love German metal. That's one of the reasons why I'm learning German!

While we're on this bluesy kick, can anyone help me ID a song? Female vocalist, and the only marking on the vinyl single (which was from 1960 or before) was "Christie" or "Christy", but is it definitely not June Christy.

The song goes on about her troubles and finally she goes down to a "Someone's Pond" (I've forgotten the name there) with the apparent intent to drown herself. The tone is a bit like St. James Infirmary, but the voice is off the the same direction as Ella Fitzgerald (tho with not quite that depth; might be a Caucasian singer). The background music is subtle and not jazzy; the vocals dominate.

The vinyl belonged to a DJ acquaintance of some 40 years ago; he played it as his Friday night signoff tune on KBMN Radio (Bozeman, Montana) but it got lost along the way and he can't remember any more than I do. And of course I haven't heard it since KBMN was sold in 1975 and its formerly unique format changed to SOS.

The only one I can think of is Lou Christy, a guy from around that time. I know you're looking for a woman singer, but this guy has a very high voice.

<goes off, finds sample> Nope, definitely not him! She really did sound like Ella Fitzgerald, but less rich.

Or these guys?

I have a feeling I've been of no help at all.

Nope, but it's fun being reminded they exist :)

This may be the musical mystery of the century. It's quite possible that this single was sent out to radio stations, but never released to the public.

Yeah, I'd really like to help. Kind of a challenge at this point. I'm gonna keep digging.

Was it just her voice quality that sounded like Ella? Not the genre, right? If she was a jazz singer I might be able to track her down.

Thanks.. I've dug and dug and discovered exactly nothing!

Which reminds me, I should ask Ray Pratt, super-duper ancient-blues specialist. Why didn't I think of that before? <slap>

Yeah, just the voice. The style was... kinda blues, but with an infusion of tragic lounge singer. Definitely not jazzy, and not the humpty-dump beat of old old blues either.
