Seun, that's excellent news--Rupert Heath is a very well-respected agency, with a good list of clients. My fingers are very tightly crossed for you.

Cheers. I have to admit to my first reaction on reading his email was complete shock that he replied so quickly and wanted a sample. :)

Queried on Dec 20th, got a request for 50 pages on Jan 2nd, got a rejection Jan 3rd.

However, in the email they pitch their e-book...

If you haven’t already, please consider downloading our e-book ‘The Knowledge’ from the agency website for more detailed guidance on getting the right agent and publisher. It represents extremely good value, we think, is packed with essential information hard or impossible to find elsewhere, and will give you a real advantage in your search for representation.

Apparently it costs money. Isn't that a little...skeevy?

Several UK agents now offer an e-book or a PDF on that same subject. I can imagine they're desperate to reduce the number of inappropriate submissions: but I'm not sure how I feel about them charging for it. Hmmm.

IMHO, as long as there's no implied "you must buy this to be considered", it's harmless if a trifle gauche. (You should see Maass's pitch for his books. His The Career Novelist is now available for free download, though.)

I e-queried Rupert Heath on Dec 10th. He responded with a request for a full on Jan 7th, then had a very brief (but at least quick) rejection on Jan 10th.

It's been a couple of years, skywarrior, but in '09 when I queried him it was "emailagency at rupertheath dot com." Very nice man, IMO. Our exchange after he requested my partial remains one of my mostest favorite of my querying experience. Good luck!

ETA: Just checked website. That's still the query addy.

I kept the copy of a response from Rupert Heath, he said:

'You definitely have a narrative voice working here, and it gives the novel a rare power. This in itself is something which incredibly few novelists can hope to achieve.'

The work is now with a publisher - but not through Rupert.

Mr. Heath requested the first 50pp back on 8th April.

Still waiting!

*chews nails*.

(probably jinxed myself now, haven't I?)

I just received a very charming and encouraging rejection from Mr. Heath. He passed the chapters to his colleague and they both decided that it fell between genres and publishers would have a problem with that.

He's encouraged me to submit to him again when I have something else ready.

I emailed him back, thanked him for his response and told him I'd like to send the WW2 novel I'm beating into shape to him when it's done.
He responded that he'd be 'very glad' to look at it.

So yay. :) I'd love to work with him.

I'm interested in approaching this agency (as they represent a favourite HF author) and followed the link to Amazon, where you can buy it as a download for about £1.50:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sex-Lies-Book-Publishing-Author-ebook/dp/B00B9MA0DU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387395382&sr=8-1&keywords=sex+lies+and+book+publishing

I already have copies of Carole Blake's From Pitch to Publication and several of Nicola Morgan's books, so I'll probably buy this too.

He requested a partial from me in January but I've heard nothing.

Site and FB activity ceased in '15, which is also when the company was voluntarily stuck off the register.
