It looks very much like the prizes are promotional copies of books.
They seem to also list the URLs of authors who are running contests on their pages.
If you want a promotional copy of a book, I suppose it couldn't hurt.

To clarify, Author Island is a readers' community which offers ways to win promotional items. They also link to authors' contests. Be aware that the featured authors/publishers range from Ellora's Cave to PublishAmerica, so the product(s) you receive could vary wildly in quality.
