Online Writing Courses

I heard Gotham City Writing Courses are good. Has anyone taken these?

The University of Edinburgh has a good distance learning course if you are in that time zone. I was going to take it but moved to the US.

IMHO there's no writing course that's a substitute for writing.

Can I recommend one? No -- I personally have never taken a writing course.

If one will help you get words on paper, though....

You might want to read through the AW thread entitled "learn writing from Uncle Jim" (James Macdonald's) before you spend any folding money on a course....it may eliminate your need for any course!

Nothing teaches you how to write a book better than writing one.

I wasn't so sure about online learning until I took Sandra Miller Louden's greeting card course. It definitely changed my perception for the better; I learned a ton, it got me writing, and I wound up with a lucrative side income.

I took a Writer's Digest Online Writing Course last year -- the one I chose was fantastic for me (I experimented with different genres). It got me writing outside of my comfort level and pushed me creatively, got me stretching. Totally worthwhile from that point of view.

I've taken the Long Ridge class and it is not that good. It may be okay if you want to learn some small things, any writing book can tell you how to do what they teach. I paid a down payment and then stopped about two months later. It is no better than the cheap amazon.com books like "How to write a damn good novel" only the class has less details. Go to search and write in Long Ridge Writers Group and you'll see a few threads on it.
