In honor of "Poem in Your Pocket Day" I would like you to submit a poem no longer than 10 lines to me at novelistatwildbluedotnet with the words Pocket Poem in subject line.

Put the title of the poem in the body of email above the poem. Please do not send attachments.
Deadline is April 28th and poems will be posted on April 30th without names and winners will be announced on May 8. Prizes will be awarded for 1, 2, and 3 place.

SFPA New Poets Contest: The Art of Poetry

Hello Writers:

The Science Fiction Poetry Association is sponsoring an art-related contest for new poets called "SFPA New Poets Contest: The Art of Poetry."

If you write poems about science or in any speculative genre (science-fiction, fantasy, horror), and have three or fewer paid poetry publications, then you are eligible to submit up to three poems for the contest. Full guidelines can be found here, and are summarized below.

For more than 30 years, the SFPA has promoted the work of the best poets in the speculative genres. The SFPA publishes the poetry newsletter Star*Line and showcases nominees for their annual Rhysling Award in a yearly anthology. The SFPA hopes that this new contest will help raise awareness about the association with emerging poets, and that new poets will consider investing themselves in this genre as writers and readers for the rest of their lives.

The contest is offering small cash prizes (10$ or less) as well as SFPA membership or a book speculative poetry to the three top poems submitted. The contest is being run on the SFPA Website, and you MUST register to even SEE the contest topic which is "SPFA New Poets Contest: The Art of Poetry." It is also password protected. This is to protect the poets and their poems, and to keep down any possible spam. Submit poems as new topics, as shown by the example. Maximum of 20 lines each, three poems per poet, each in a different post.

The SFPA has chosen five works of art, and linked to them under the topic on the website. The poem(s) submitted MUST be inspired, however loosely, by one of these five works of art. Some are classics, like Vermeer's 'The Astronomer', and 'The Hunt of the Unicorn' tapestry. But there is also modern space art from Don Davis. The SFPA is a speculative poetry society, so poetry themes must follow science-fiction, horror, fantasy, straight science, or have some speculative aspect.

The deadline is June 30, 2010. So view the art, write some poems, and post your very best to the contest website!

Opportunities for More Cash!!!

Well, it's not JUST about the money, there's the possibility of poetic recognition and fame, if that interest you/me/whatever.....

I would love to say I have a new contest to post but I don't, at the moment. I will go hunting some down tomorrow and hopefully have something posted during the course of the day.

Otherwise, I want to bump it up as we're into a NEW YEAR and with all our new year resolutions, I'm sure there are some of us who would like to venture out and SUBMIT!

We had a lot of great previous contest opportunities posted for the previous years.......anyone know where some action is happening???

Where opinions have a distinct aroma.
The Evertalis Poetry Contest started officially as of today. There is an entry fee of $5

Prize money is calculated and amassed through entry fees

You are required to pay $5 (USD) prior to submitting your poem. This is broken down into devised areas per entry fee:

$2.50 – 1st Prize

$1.50 – 2nd Prize

$0.50 – 3rd Prize

$0.50 - site donation

What this means is that should there, for example, be 100 entries (100x5=500) then the total prize money would be $250 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd and $50 for 3rd. The more entrants, the higher the prize money.

You are free to submit an unlimited number of poems, but we do ask you keep this to a reasonable amount as you are required to pay the entry fee in full per entry.

The site donation is intended to assist in funding and marketing future competitions and initiatives and to help defray ongoing expenses.

There are no restrictions on form, but be sure to read the guidelines anyway.

Limerick contest

Stumbled across this by accident and e-mailed the sponsor about it. She told me it is a new contest and that they are trying to gain more interest in it. She also said that as long as they have at least three contestants each month, there will be a contest with $100 first place prize and $50 second place prize.

There is a $5 entry fee, and they have not had a lot of entrants, but I'm sharing this information nonetheless. You can decide for yourself if it's worth a shot. I haven't decided yet.
