Weyant Press, Inc. is a scam

OnceBurned

I posted this in the "Bewares" forum, but I wanted to post it here so newbies could be forewarned:

My first royalty check with Weyant Press, Inc. bounced. I did not receive a sales
report, and my bounced check did not detail any of my sales. When I
complained, they severed my contract via e-mail. They have not replied to any
further correspondence from me. This was the final straw in a year of hell with
this lousy POD publisher. Other problems were as follows:

Their downloadable contract was signed and sent to them. I never received a
copy in return with their signatures.

It took them 9 mos. to get my book printed and released, not the three they
promised.

My first copy was full of grammatical, synax, spacing errors...and they do all the
editing! They claimed their outsourced printer used the wrong proof. (Well, who
gave it to them? grr...) They promised to pull all the bad copies and reprint my
book, but months later, the garbage edition was still being sold through the
online retailers.

I never received my copyright certificate that they said they had arranged for
me. Upon investigation, it was never registered.

Customers wrote to ME to complain that they had not yet received their
purchased book when they ordered through the publisher - some had waited 6
mos. or more, most are still waiting.

I created my cover. A month before printing, they claimed my images weren't
good enough for their printer, so they changed the design. Come to find out,
they had started a cover design service and just wanted to claim my cover as
one of their own originals.

Now I am in the process of finding another publisher to print my book. I need a
letter from Weyant Press stating their intent to sever. No publisher will touch
my book without it. What do you think my chances are of getting this? I have a
better chance of winning the lottery.

Never, EVER do business with an online publisher! There aren;t enough laws to
protect authors from these kinds of scam artists.

Have you considered suing them? If you never received a signed contract from them, maybe you have no legally binding contract which means there is no problem in getting a new company to publish your book.

Lawguru.com has advice on intellectual property issues. You can also post a question for free and get an answer from one or more attorneys.

Good luck.
