My wife got an email that a distant relative died in Africa. She was contact by a Barrister Jim Michael Esq. He informed her that the bank will be in contact with her so that she can obtain this money. All he wants is 30%.

These scams are evolving at least.

I get 10 of these a day, and so far, not one of them has paid up.

Mysteriously, though, all our savings disapeared earlier this week.

Good thing I got this email today: Dear Partner,
On behalf of Mr. Mikhail Khodorkovsky, my boss who motivated this intent, please so kind to contact me at your earliest convenience for a way forward.I was reading through a webpage and found your profile interesting while searching for a possible partner following an
opportunity that will be of immense benefit to both of us,if pursued to its logical conclusion.

I want to do business with this person!

Dear Sir/madam,

I know this email may come to you as a surprise. I, the Director of the Economic and Financial Crime Comission{EFCC} of the Nigeria state
security agency organised and commissioned by Mr.President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is aware of the way most Nigerians are scamming foreigners through transfer of fund etc. That is the reason why the Mr.President has decided to commission this committee to fight against indiscipline and scam in the country. So if you have any information about how they can be traced and if you want your money.........................

or.........

My name is Andrew Rudd ,here is a brief introduction of myself,i am an artist with my wife Clara ,I live in Manchester United Kingdom, with my three kids, four cats, one dog .It is definitely a full house, I have been doing artwork since I was a small child and that has give me about 23 years of experience.

or ................
I am taking this prospect to write to you on the topic of my late client who was working as a contractor for Energias Verdes S.A. here in Spain. Unfortunately, he and his family met with an accident at Ronda de dalt in Barcelona, Spain on 17th of June 1999. Sadly all occupants of the vehicle lost their lives and since then, I have tried to find out about his relatives by publishing in the news paper and through consulate but this have bear out unsuccessful.

And, believe me - those are just tat he top of my delete box of my emal.

Are you going to have it surgically added to your body? Women might dig a guy with two members.

Gee, thanks for that visual!

I sat down to my computer and had two IM messages from men I didn't know and one asked me if I wanted to see his pic. I wasn't even logged in and have not gotten a request to add them to my friend list. Is this a new way of spamming?

Does anyone really fall for that stuff? I can't imagine. Yet, if they didn't, wouldn't these emails stop. Someone, somewhere --- it's terrible to think that some sweet and naiive person actually falls for that kind of thing.

And Maestro, come on! -- 2 members? LOL - I don't want to even picture that! Why would you need two? One to rest while the other works? LOL

When I won my money at the online casino... I didn't even believe it was real until the deposit posted AND cleared my account.

deacon

you wouldn't need all that money if you would just start claiming all of those laptops you've won. you could sell them at a discount and clean up.

not to mention the ipods.

puhleeeeease, guide me!!!

From Donald Richmond
Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire,
West Africa.

Dearest,

It is a good a thing to write you (hm, shall we proofread it, then? ). I have a proposal for you-this however is not mandatory nor will I in any manner compel you to honour against your will. (oh, thanks!!! )

I am Donald Richmond, 20years old and my junior Sister (she's a nun!) Anita Richmond we are the children of out late parents Mr.and Mrs.Richmond O'Neal from a Royal family in Ghana. My father was a highly reputable business merchant (cocoa merchant ) who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days (not before, not after, hmmm...).

It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad year 12th.Febuary 2001. (huh?!) Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle (let's keep it in the family, shal we -- Royal Famility, that is...) of his who travelled with him at that time, But God knows the truth!

Our mother died when I was 13 years old, and since then our father took us so special. (...er...) Before my fathers death on 12th Febuary2001, (he aged 2 years extra, huh ? ) he told me that he has the sum of Eleven million, seven hundred thousand United State Dollars (USD$11.700,000) left in one of the leading security company in Cote D'Ivoire. (so, didja kill him then, didja??) He made the deposit of the fund in a metalic trunk box (let's be specific, shall we! what kind of metal?) as containing family valuable that belongs to a foreign partner (um, i'm confused - whose family? so he stole the foreign partner's 'family valuable'??) . He further told me that he deposited the box in my name as all the documents bear my name as the depositor, and for the company not to open the box he made the beneficary as foreign partner. (melost...)

I am just 20 years old and a university undergraduate (wow! me tickled pinkish :D ), my only junior Sister is 17years old and really we cannot handle the retrivemet of this fund alone without the help of a foreign partner .This is because we have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast (good reason!!). The death of our father actually brought alot sadnees to our life.(nah! sniffle-sniffle...)

I am in a sincere desire (how does it feel down there? ) of your humble assistance in this regards. Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded.

Now permit me to ask these few questions:-

1. Can you honestly help us as your family ?

2. Can we completely trust you?

3. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you ?

Please,Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible. Through my private email box bellow for security reason ([email protected])

My sincere regards,
Donald Richmond.

Yes. Sometimes shockingly so, such as the case of a woman in a screenwriting group of mine years ago. This was a small group of writers, and membership was restricted-- you had to get voted in based on a screenplay or two that the other members would rate. So she was, at the very least, a talented writer.

Well, one day she told us that she had found funding to start her own production company and she was going to begin producing her own scripts, then she wanted to produce other scripts. She had to travel to meet with her financiers, and none of us asked many questions. Finally it all unraveled one day... she fell for a Nigerian scam. Through a series of e-mails and phone calls, she believed that this person was going to give her millions of dollars for her film company in exhange for a percentage for depositing the money in the US for him, or whatever. She actually flew there to meet with the guy and everything.

She died shortly after that, so I don't feel so weird telling the story, but I think all of us were shocked that she would be that naive. She was fairly Internet savvy and had surely heard of these scams before, but just wanted to believe so badly that she chose to believe, and got ripped off tens of thousands of dollars, from what I remember.

Thing is, even my brother (who has Down syndrome) is savvy enough now to forward me things that he's not sure about. He'll get one of these "You won the International Lotto!" e-mails and send it on to me so I can tell him whether or not it's real.

It's hard for me to understand the mindset of a person who'd buy into those e-mails.

wow - horrible story... guess anyone can be vulnerable if 'stuck in the wrong moment' when a 'miraculous solution' shows itself!

that's why it's not a bad idea to ask your friends for input before taking that trip - or transferring that 'processing fee'....

Jenna's post reminded me of something that happened about 10 years ago in Vegas.

I had just purchased a condo and lived near a senior citizen who was a widower and in poor health.

(Interesting that 3 retired couples had purchased condos next to each other - and lived there happily for years. But one wife died, then a second wife and the third wife. Then, there were only 3 old men - all in their late 70's and in poor health. I bought my condo from one, but there were two left when I moved in - both died within 6 months.)

Anyway - one afternoon - one of the old gentlemen knocked on my door, asking me to read a letter he had received in the mail. (His eyesight was poor.) It was one of those "You are the winner of ...............". God, I was horrified to read that to him, so I just told him it was nothing - an ad, and walked him back home.

I guess that was another one of those haunting moments.

Late in my grandmother's life, she was going a bit mad at the time, she was convinced that she had won the Ed McMahon contest worth millions. This was never a push-over of a woman. She was very money savvy and had invested her way to a lot of money.

I remember visiting her in the home and she had the paper work all spread out on a coffee table. She was so excited that it had said she was going to meet Ed McMahon and he was going to bring her $10,000,000. I was so heartbroken to tell her that I and about 10,000,000 other people got the same letter.

She just didn't want to hear it.

I got another scam email today. This one from a child who needed me to help with the deposit of $11.1 million. It is sad to think that there may be another grandmother out there that believes these emails.

Once you've heard the truth, everything else is ju
On the Truth or Fiction site a couple of years ago was a truly heart-rendering (as my Southern relatives say) tale. To wit, it was the story of Billy, the Boy Born Without a Body. As I recall, it was structured exactly along the lines of the email scams, but done for laughs. Billly related as to how his dad had constructed a body for him made out of a Hefty bag filled with leaves, how the other kids made fun of him by using him as second base, and so on. Man, it was a scream. (Oh yeah, he said his mother was typing the letter for him...him being born without a body and all...)
