Santa Bárbara bendita, a traditional Asturian miners' song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjkCVgdDS28

In the María Luisa mine

Trailarai larai, trailarai

In the María Luisa mine

Trailarai larai, trailarai

Four miners have died

Look, look Maruxina, look

look how I'm coming home

My shirt has turned red

Trailarai larai, trailarai

My shirt has turned red

Trailarai larai, trailarai

Stained with the blood of a fellow miner

Look, look Maruxina, look

look how I'm coming home

My head has broken

Trailarai larai, trailarai

My head has broken

Trailarai larai, trailarai

It was broken in a blast

Look, look Maruxiña, look

look how I'm coming home

Blessed Saint Barbara,

Trailarai larai, trailarai

Blessed Saint Barbara

Trailarai larai, trailarai

Patron saint of the miners

Look, look Maruxina, look

look how I'm coming home

Patron saint of the miners

Look, look Maruxina, look

look how I'm coming home

A song called Our Farewell. I have no idea who sang it - female singer with a voice sounding sort of like a cross between Alanis Morrissette and Sarah McLachlan.

It was played at a funeral I went to a few weeks ago and it just destroyed me.

"Run" by Snow Patrol has always been the one that sent chills down my spine... and the Leona Lewis version just makes me sob every time.

Arms of the Angel by Sarah Maclachlan

Not sure it's the saddest, but definitely brings a tear to my eye when I hear it.

Ohmygod, YES. Did you see the video of her and Pink doing this as a duet at the AMAs? It gave me goosebumps... just amazing.

Missed it. I'll have to see if it's on YouTube.

ETA: In looking for Sarah with Pink, I found her and Josh Groban singing it. *flutter*

Absolutely:
Smoke gets in your eyes... the Platters

They, asked me how I knew, my true love was true
Oohh I of course replied, something here inside, cannot be denied
They said someday you'll find, all who love are blind
Oohh When your heart's on fire, you must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed to think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away, I am without my love (without my love)

Now laughing friends deride, tears I cannot hide
Oohh So I smile and say, when a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes

(smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)

Smoke gets in your eyes

There's a Christmas song that I heard played during the Vietnam War (but might have been written during another previous war) called "March of the Angels." It was on the Harry Simeone Winter Wonderland album. It's about soldiers far away from home during the holidays. Very appropriate now.
