Do you mean No-Record Press? http://www.no-record.com/index.html

They call themselves a non-profit literary organization.

Here's their novel submissions guidelines:

Submitting a Novel
NO RECORD accepts submissions of novel length works of literary fiction by previously unpublished (novel) writers on an ongoing basis. However, if you believe that your work has commercial potential, we advise that you seek the more traditional route to publication by a mainstream, for-profit organization.

Please email the first 50 pages of your novel (double spaced, 12pt font), in the form of a Microsoft Word or an Adobe pdf file, as an attachment. If we are interested in further considering your work, we will request you submit the entire novel at that time.

They also have guidelines for anthologies (which I haven't looked at).

Is this what you're looking for?

They may be on the up and up, but there's too little information to tell. The website claims that the company was established in 2006 with "private donations" but doesn't provide any detail. Is this a registered not-for-profit? Is there a Board of Directors? Who's the staff? A real not-for-profit should provide all this info.

More important, from the writer's perspective: there is no information on who is running the company, so you have no idea whether or not they're qualified to select, edit, publish, and market books.

Another warning sign: writers chosen for the anthology will be compensated "on publication." Translation: possibly never. There's also no detail on what the compensation will be--a flat fee? Payment by word count? Some kind of royalty split?

This publisher is aptly named, IMO.

Dear Victoria,

It claims donations are tax exempt. If it's a 501 organization, there shouldbe some record somewhere.

Regards,
Scott

A quick flit through the IRS doesn't find any non-profit registered under that name (closest is No Limits Press, Inc.). Did find this though:

http://newpages.com/contributors/default.htm

Miles Clark was the worst college football player in America (statistically verifiable) before being expelled from Oberlin College. He wandered from place to place before finally moving to a San Francisco hotel room, where he is paid a grand total of $0 for work at McSweeney's, The Believer and Zoetrope: All-Story. He is the editor-in-chief of No Record Press (www.no-record.com), a position which also pays $0, though he has recently acquired, for the suspiciously-modest sum of $0, the brand-new computer on which this biographical note is being written. His writing can be viewed on the internet for $0; his first novel, which is forthcoming, will be worth every $0.01.

 And this person expects people to submit? Mmm, I don't think so. I like making a profit, thanks. Yanno, that whole bill paying thing and all.

Technically, they could be running non-profit efforts through another organization's 501C registration. So who knows?

Spaaaaaaam, wonderful Spam ...

Furthermore, their sales copy is self-indulgent and just generally sucks. I think I was right the first time: these guys are playing, not publishing.

I don't see any advantage to publishing with these guys over publishing on your own personal web page.

In fact, I see a couple of advantages in publishing on your own webpage over theirs.

There's no longer any record of this press, and the myspace page hasn't been updated since July '07.
