CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Christmas Traditions: True Stories of Holiday Celebration

Send submissions to: Helen Kay Polaski (Szymanski) at [email protected]

Christmas Traditions: True Stories of Holiday Celebration will be filled with stories that touch the mind as well as the soul as they take the reader on a magical journey through Christmas—past and present—while giving the reader ideas for traditions they might be interesting in adapting in the future. Each story will focus on either a well-known holiday tradition or a unique tradition known only to a particular family or community, as well as a touching story that circulates around each individual tradition. (I love traditions and can’t wait to see how your family celebrates Christmas!)

Stories must be first person, true accountings of either shared or unique traditions celebrated by families, communities, and/or groups during the Christmas holiday season, and all must be based on strong individual family/community dynamics, specific geographical location, and/or different cultures and religion. Approximately 70-80 stories (700-1,200 words) will be gathered. (When writing your story please keep in mind that Christmas is the most magical time of the year. I want to see the magic unfolding on the page before me as I read, and so do my readers.)

Payment: upon publication, $75 and a copy of the book (for each accepted story)

Angel Face, a poetry publication, seeks strong visual poetry of the human experience for the 4th issue. Poems selected are arranged according to the rosary mysteries, but submitting poets need not be Catholic or Christian to submit.

Editor prefers secular/spiritual poems over overtly religious works. Prefers poems from the poet’s life that somehow bring a particular mystery “into life.” But will also consider poems written from the biblical source material for the mysteries.

Some Christian content is inevitable. The goal with each issue is to bring the rosary “into life.” Do not want to see works that merely repeat the biblical information. No rhyme, first drafts, didactic, erotica, or experimental.

This is a unique publication. Most poems published in Angel Face were not written with the rosary in mind. Sample copies are $7.00 each. For sample poems, rosary information links, and full submission guidelines, go to --

www.maryanka.com

The editor does not consider e-mailed submissions for various reasons (see Editor’s Notes). To submit, send up to 5 typed poems, plus SASE, to --

Black Lyon Publishing (http://www.blacklyo npublishing. com) is a new publisher (established January 2007) publishing romance in ebook and trade paper formats. Black Lyon seems to be aiming to fill a niche other publishers aren't. They're interested in acquiring 'sweet' romance. Sexual tension is a must, but no swearing and no graphic sex. Contemporary romance may have an urban or rural setting. Manuscripts should be 40,000 - 60,000 words. On the historical romance side, the editors prefer European set stories that take place between 1000 and 1600 AD. 60,000 - 90,000 words. Paranormal romance may be steamier -- in fact, these books should have a "dark, sensuously gothic feel." 60,000 -90,000 words. The editors are also actively seeking historical romances set prior to 1000 AD for a new Ancient Times Romance line. 60,000 - 90,000 words. The editors prefer email submissions. Guidelines are available at their website.

Feel free to pass along this newsletter and to encourage others to sign up to receive it. If you reprint or forward the newsletter, all I ask is that I be given credit for it. Anyone can sign up by sending a blank email to cynthiasterling- subscribe@ yahoogroups. com

Attention Ladies!

We are compiling stories to be included in a ministry book entitled "Women
of Passions"
in which we focus on the three primary passions in our lives -
God, family, and ministry. These are the topics we teach on in our
conferences/ seminars. Providing a book with personal testimonies or stories
will be an added blessing and ministry outreach to women struggling with
maintaining proper balance in life or feeling inadequate, something familiar
to us all.

We are looking for women's personal true stories/testimonies using the
following topics.

1. Passion for God ~ A woman's passion for God grows from relationship
with Him through worship, through instruction in the Word, through prayer,
and through obedience. For instance .

a. How has your passion for God grown in these areas?
b. Has seeking God first according to Matthew 6:33 changed your life?
If so, how?

2. Passion for Family ~ A woman's passion for her family grows from her
relationship with God, learning to walk in her role as a wife and mother
and/or daughter from sound Biblical instruction. For instance .

. How has keeping family priorities in order has impacted your
life?

a. How have you as a younger woman been mentored or trained by an older
woman according to Titus 2:4-5, or the other way around - you as an older
woman training/mentoring a younger woman?
b. How have your proper priorities impacted your family

3. Passion for Ministry ~ We are all called to a ministry of
reconciliation, according to 2 Corinthians 5:18, to passionately share the
love of Christ to others so they, too, may be reconciled to God through
Jesus Christ. A woman's passion for ministry exudes from a heart that is in
right relationship with God. For instance .

. Share a testimony of the circumstances of your calling to
ministry.

a. How has God used your life to lead others to Christ?
b. How have you learned to balance your life to not allow ministry to
consume you?

We believe God takes the ordinary and performs the extraordinary through
them. All He requires is a yielded vessel. God has given gifts to us that
lie dormant because we become so distracted in our imbalanced lives. The
key to unlocking these gifts is pursuing a balanced life with priorities in
line. And, in so doing, we will become more effective Christians fulfilling
our calling to build and strengthen the Kingdom of God.

Please keep your submission around 1,000 words or less, although the limit
is not absolutely firm. We are also looking for well-crafted poetry that
fits the topics listed above. Please be sure your article is proofread and
checked for spelling and grammar errors.

Please send your submission to jan@janross. org. The deadline for submissions
is November 15th.

By submitting your article, you give us the right to publish your article.
If your submission is chosen to become part of this publication, you will
receive a free copy of the book and the right to purchase a limited number
of additional copies at cost. There will be no other compensation. If you
wish, we will be pleased to include a short paragraph with your personal
info/other writing credits/education/ training/ awards in the back.

Please only submit original content. Although we encourage you to submit
new work, feel free to use your own previously published content to which
you hold the rights with the understanding that you release to us the rights
to use your submission even if you have it copyrighted.

We are excited to include you in this project and look forward to reading
your submissions. Feel free to submit more than one article. Also feel
free to share this opportunity with other Christian writers.

Serving Him Passionately,

Jan Ross

This is a "Call for Stories" for a new anthology called "My Mom Is My
Hero"
(please see details below).

For the writers who submitted stories for "My Teacher Is My Hero," the
finalists have been selected and the writers whose stories were
submitted for final approval were notified and sent an Agreement
Letter. If you have not heard anything from me since you submitted
your story, unfortunately, your story was not selected. Due to the
volume of stories received, I won't have an opportunity to send
personal assessments, for which I apologize. Your story may have been
good, however, those who thoroughly read and abided by the guidelines,
avoided stereotypical or overdone subjects (death, illness, writer
slant), focused on the hero more than themselves, or provided
substantial beginning/middle/end stories won out. Some choices were
made for diversity so it helps to reach for, and convey, what makes
your hero unique. Also, make the hero come to life on the page, and
honor what it is/was that made them special. The hero's deeds don't
have to be extraordinary, but the story has to be told extraordinarily
well.

So, on to the next! For the second book in Adams Media's new Hero
series, we seek fifty 850-1400 word true stories no later than
NOVEMBER 30, 2007.

We pay $100 per story (one per volume), plus a copy of the book, and
we will also award three prizes $100, $75, and $50 for the top three
stories. I look very much forward to working with you!

A summary of what we want, formatting requirements, and story tips
follows. Please follow them carefully. Also, please click on
www.literarycottage.com and carefully review all the text under: "Hero
Series Guidelines" where you will also find new sample stories.

My Mom Is My Hero

Being a mother often proves the most difficult, and the most
important, job in the world; one that includes conflict but also
brings rich—albeit often unspoken—rewards. In this anthology, we
seek
to honor real-life mothers and, therefore, want inspiring, true,
personal stories that speak to the challenges, ultimately positive
experiences, and extraordinary relationships between mothers and their
children (mothers of all ages, i.e., grandmothers count). The majority
of stories in this collection will be written from the adult child's
point of view, but it is also acceptable to submit third person
stories by authors who have intimate knowledge of the mother and her
children. Also a woman who served as a mother figure, who played a
significant role, or who performed a heroic deed may also be honored.
Heroic deeds range from rescuing a child from physical peril to
holding down a steady job and raising children with exceptional values
or work ethics. As we will print very few stories focused on illness
or dying, we encourage authors to choose another time that illustrates
your mother's unique character, drive, strength, dedication,
tenderness, generosity, intelligence, humor, etc. Bring your mother to
life on the page and show the world why she is worthy of accolades.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 30, 2007

Please e-mail entries to [email protected] as a separate
Word attachment. If you don't have Word available, embed the copy in
your e-mail message (Times New Roman, no special formatting, please).

BASICS: 850-1400 WORDS, tightly written, focused, true, uplifting

Formatting Requirements:

Send all stories as a separate WORD document. If you don't have Word,
embed the story into the body of the e-mail.
Single-space all contact info (name, address, phone, e-mail) at the
top left of the document.
No headers or footers; No page numbers.
Use 12 pt. Times New Roman; single or 1.5 spacing.
Make Paragraphs flush left with one extra space between them. No
indentations.
Only use ONE space after a period.
Do not put titles in all CAPS; Do not include byline.
Do not put "The End" or anything else at the end.
At the bottom of your document, please provide a tightly focused
three-sentence bio. Bios may include selected writing credits, but
limit self-promotion to mention of a website. Humor is good. Link it
to the story if relevant.

Story Tips:

Story must be true and uplifting. We are honoring mothers.
Tell a story—utilizing classic story structure, i.e.,
beginning/middle/end
If you write an essay or profile, they must include dynamic
characterization
Keep the focus on your mother/mother-figure; she's the heroine of the
story!
Use description, characterization, action, and dialogue to bring your
mother to life on the page
Focus on a momentous event that illustrates your mother's heroic
character
SHOW us why your mother is/was unique, exceptional, colorful, dramatic,
heroic
Cut right to the chase, open with a scene; do not open with "My mom is
my hero because…."
Come up with a snappy, evocative title; avoid "My Mom, My Hero," etc.
Avoid death and illness stories (we'll get way too many)
Strive for unique, fascinating, entertaining, distinctive tales
Make all the characters in the story dimensional, memorable
Please use active voice and strong verbs. Avoid "It was" and "There
was" sentences.
Use potent, succinct modifiers.
Employ a strong voice
Humor is WELCOME

THANK YOU, and I look forward to receiving your stories!

All best regards,

Susan

Submission guidelines for Infinite Space, Infinite God II

With the literary success of Infinite Space, Infinite God and in
anticipation of its success in sales, Karina and Robert Fabian, in
conjunction with Twilight Times Books, are taking a leap of faith by
compiling Infinite Space, Infinite God II.

Submissions begin January 1 unless you have already received a special
invitation to submit early.

ISIG II will again feature the best of science fiction with a Catholic
world view. The guidelines are similar to ISIG I.

1. Stories should be 3,000-10,000 words. We'd like 12-15 stories,
plus introductions, so we're looking for variety of lengths.

2. Science Fiction stories only. We're not looking for fantasy.
While we're glad to look at the usual plot conventions of SF--time
travel, faster-than- light travel, etc.--we do not want Star Trek-type
technobabble where real science is available. In all cases, the
science should be believable within the story's universe; projections
of current science are encouraged. Do not break the laws of physics
without a reasonable explanation, or we'll have to call the logic police.

3. Catholic stories only. You don't need to be Catholic, but your
stories do! Characters and/or settings must be genuinely Catholic.
Catholic theology and practices must conform to the Magesterium- -or
have an incredibly good reason to veer! (We'll be tougher about it
this time.) This is especially true for any doctrine that is ex
cathedra. This does not mean all your characters need to be saints or
even Catholic, but that the Church itself is portrayed with the same
steadfast morals and doctrine that it has maintained throughout
history. Please research any questions: check with a reputable
Catholic site online, the Catechism of the Catholic Church or a
Catholic priest or deacon. Don't rely on what you remember the nuns
telling you in grade school back in 1972.

4. No re-runs. Please read Infinite Space, Infinite God to avoid
repeating a story idea/treatment. (You can purchase ISIG at
www.twilighttimesbo oks.com, www.amazon.com, or from your favorite
bookstore; ask your library to order it (Baker and Taylor and Ingrams
distribute it), or at least read the synopsis of stories at
http://isigsf. com.)

5. Tell a good story. Write well. 'Nuff said.

Here are some of the things we rejected for ISIG I or are wary of for
ISIG II:

--Lectures disguised as stories. Purpose Number One of ISIG is to
entertain.
--Long sermon/discussion sandwiched between a plot. This includes
political as well as religious diatribes. We want to reach a wide
audience and while we hope some folks will be touched by the stories,
we're not out to evangelize with them.
--Jesus is cloned. Not against it per se, but no one yet has made it
work, story-wise.
--Generic Christian with a crucifix. No nuns praying someone will
"accept Jesus as his personal savior."
--Telling, not showing. This goes for faith characteristics as well
as plot.
--Deus ex machina or Deus ex Deum. If you're going to use a miracle
of technology or a regular miracle to resolve your plot complications
(as opposed to being part of your plot complications… ), you'd better
write a really compelling story!
--Black-and- white absolutes. Catholics are good; others are bad. The
world has gone to hell--except for the Church. Evil scientists versus
good believers. We're trying to break those stereotypes.
--Apocalyptic fiction. Please make sure you know the Catholic
understanding of Revelations.
--Re-runs. Please read Infinite Space, Infinite God to avoid
repeating a story idea/treatment. (ISIG authors: You are welcome to
use the same characters or universe as your former stories.)

5. Reprints OK, but we are going to try to avoid them this time, if
possible. Please include proof that you have the rights.

6. You may submit more than one story.

How to submit: Send stories to Karina at karina@fabianspace. com.
Send it as a Word or .rtf attachment. Type ISIG II in the subject line.

Format: House Style for Twilight Times
Title should be in 24-point type and centered.
Author's name should be ten lines below the title 18-point type and
centered.
Chapter Headings should be in 14-point type, bold and centered.
Body text should be Times New 12-point type and single-spaced. Only
one space between sentences, not two spaces.
Do not create a table of contents.
Set margins to 1.25 inches - top, bottom, left and right.
Do not use five spaces for indentation - this causes uneven lines
when the text is formatted to full justification. If you use tabs in
some chapters and five spaces in others, then this also causes uneven
lines when the text is formatted to full justification.
Tabs should be set at .3 and not .5. Please ensure that your tabs are
consistent throughout.
Do not use indent. The indent option will throw the asterisks
separating scenes and the chapter headings off center. Paragraph
format - select first line indention, single spacing, left justification.
No line breaks between paragraphs. No blank lines between paragraphs.
Insert a hard page break at the end of the text on the last page of
each chapter, before the beginning of the next chapter.
No headers/footers, no page numbers and no hidden values.
Denote scene breaks with a triple asterisk, centered on page.
In general, a double-dash is preferred to an em-dash (required for
Fictionwise) .
Some of our books have spaces around the double-dashes so feel free
to keep the spaces around the double-dash for now. Instead of an
ellipsis (or em-dash) at the end of a sentence in quotes, I prefer
ellipsis followed by a period, even if it is not a complete sentence.
No spaces within the ellipsis marks. More tips on the use of an ellipsis.
http://www.grammarb ook.com/punctuat ion/perEllip. html
Use plain text for thoughts when a tag is used.
Example: I am working on a million-dollar best seller, he thought. Do
not place quotation marks around thoughts. For direct thoughts without
a tag, use Italic type, not underlines. Example: I wonder who will buy
the movie rights to my new book.
Use hyphenation sparingly. Better yet, try to avoid using it at all.

Compensation: We will pay $50 per story and a copy of the book per
author. You will be allowed to purchase the anthology for a reduced
price for promotions or to sell on your own if you so choose.
In addition, your bio and website will be on the ISIG website.
You'll also be invited to share news of any promotional events,
contribute an interview to the site and take part in other promotional
opportunities that can help your publicity overall.

If you are accepted: We are considering including a Study Guide and
Research Appendix. If so, we'll be asking for a bibliography of any
books, articles, etc. you used in your research and a few questions
about the religious, moral and scientific issues raised in your story.
You do not need to send those in with your submission, but keep notes
so you'll be ready to create and submit them if you are accepted.

Christian Publishers taking unsolicited novel subs

I didn't see this covered - might have missed it, but...

There are a number of Christian Publishers who are currently accepting novel queries for fiction including fantasy.

Look for submission guidelines at these publishers:

Moody Press
Tsaba House
Bethany House
Barbour Publishing
AMG Publishing

Sorry I don't have the links, but they are quickly found in a search. All of these are reputable and market and distribute into chain bookstores including Barnes and Noble and Borders along with Christian bookstores. NONE of these are vanity or print on demand publishers.

Blessings,
James

Cup of Comfort

Hello,

I am the project director for a new book with Adams Media in their
best-selling Cup of Comfort series. Cup of Comfort books have
provided inspiration, encouragement, hope, and instruction for well
over a million readers. I have spearheaded the Christian category
within the series and have compiled A Cup of Comfort Devotional, A
Cup of Comfort Devotional for Women, A Cup of Comfort for Christians,
and A Cup of Comfort Devotional for Mothers, and A Cup of Comfort
Book of Prayer. You may have submitted selections to a number of the
above, especially the last volume mentioned.

I am writing to you today to ask for your participation in a new Cup
of Comfort project. It is called A Cup of Comfort Devotional for
Mothers and Daughters. The manuscript will consist of a short, one-
page thought of between 125 and 175 words related to a spiritual
principle or concept learned in your everyday, ongoing relationship
with your daughter.

The tone and content should be positive – your growth as a Christian
mother, the goodness and power of God in your life and the lives of
your daughters, how you have both grown closer in good times and bad,
etc. Wherever possible, focus on interaction in real life, rather
than mere thoughts or abstractions about your daughter(s). The brief
story or vignette can mention more than one daughter.

We want to avoid too many stories related to illness and so we are
discouraging them, but if you have one without too many details under
positive parameters we will consider it. Each devotional must have a
crisp and creative title, a short passage of Scripture (New Living
Translation, 2004) including book chapter and verse that relates to
the content, main content related to word count above, and a brief
one sentence concluding thought.

We will issue you a permission contract surrendering the rights of
this devotional to sole use by the publisher. It also may not be
previously reprinted by any major publication. If accepted, based on
the short word count, we are offering a $20 dollar one-time fee for
this devotional to be paid upon publication. We will accept up to a
total 10 devotionals but encourage you to submit only your best
work. One is fine! If you do more than one each one must relate to
a different aspect of your relationship to your daughter. Please
don't submit them in batches, but only when you're sure you've done
them all. That way they won't trickle in.

I am hoping for a quick turnaround on your part after informing us of
your acceptance. These are short pieces and don't take the time of
larger stories. We would like final submissions by January 15 but
are willing to go a few more weeks if you let us know in advance.
Please let us know one way or another of your interest overall.
Also, feel free to share this call fro submissions with your fellow
writers who have past experience.

Thank you so much for being part of this exciting and groundbreaking
project. Please direct all inquiries, acceptances, and refusals to
my assistant Susan Townsend at [email protected]. I will not be
answering any emails directly. She will handle your contracts and
the editing of your devotionals as well. Please send her all updated
information related to payment: including street address, email
address, social security number, the name as it should appear on the
check, and bio update.

You will find below a sample of both format and content for what a
typical devotional would look like in our book.

Blessings to you and yours,

James Stuart Bell

A Place of Refuge

"But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful
praises forever. Protect them, so all who love your name may be
filled with joy."
Psalm 5:11

Maria definitely didn't approve of everything her daughter did.
Seventeen-year- old Lucy was living with an abusive boyfriend. "I'd
like to beat him up myself, but that wouldn't help any," Maria
commented crisply.
Instead, Maria encouraged Lucy to come to the house frequently. And
she made sure she didn't scold Lucy about her lifestyle. "The rest of
the world beats her up emotionally, " Maria said. "I want home to be
the place of refuge, where she can always feel love and acceptance."
As a result, Lucy spent a lot of time at home. And one day, when the
boyfriend abused her, she thought, "I'm treated way better than this
at home" and returned home.
While we still have kids at home, sure, we need to give them
instruction and guidance. But we can still make our homes centers of
love, and acceptance—a refuge in the middle of a crazy world.

We can be a refuge for our children, just as God is for us.

They certainly weren't interested in my queries a year ago. Which makes me question the salvation of everyone who works for them or has ever read any of their books. But I'm not bitter.

Jay...you so funny! :tongue

Anyway...they do accept queries, but it doesn't mean they'll respond if they don't like your idea. I submitted to Barbour recently and they "form-rejected" me...At least it was a reply, right? Okay...anyway, I need therapy now.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

"Mennonites on the edge" - Fall, 2008 issue of Rhubarb magazine
Deadline: April 30, 2008

Rhubarb magazine is seeking submissions of writing (poetry, fiction,
creative nonfiction,
and reviews) and artwork for its second West Coast-themed issue to be
published
in the Fall of 2008. All submitted works should relate or respond to
the theme of
"Mennonites on the edge" in some way, ideally more than just in terms
of geography.
Feel free to interpret that theme as you see fit.

Guest Editors for West Coast Issue: Joe Wiebe, Vancouver (fiction,
creative non-fiction)
Carla Funk & Melanie Siebert, Victoria (poetry)

Submission Guidelines:
Please submit electronic files in DOC, RTF or PDF format as email
attachments to
[email protected]. We may be printing them out on our end, so
please doublespace
them and include your contact info, word count, title, etc. Also,
please provide us
with a short writing bio in the body of your email. If you've been
published in Rhubarb
or elsewhere before, be sure to mention it.

Fiction: short stories up to 3,500 words will be considered, but keep
in mind that we
have a limited amount of space set aside for fiction so shorter stories
will probably be the
most attractive.

Creative Non-Fiction: pieces up to 3,500 words will be considered, but
as with fiction,
the shorter the better.

Reviews: we would love to print some reviews of writing, art, film, you
name it as long
as it relates to the theme, but keep the reviews short: under 600
words, please.

Poetry: maximum 5 poems or 10 pages, whatever comes first

Artwork: submit artwork in JPEG format to [email protected].
Keep the files
small, but make sure the image quality is good enough for us to judge
the artwork
properly. We are looking for colour and/or black-and-white artwork for
the cover as well
as the interior of the magazine.

New Year resolutions - now that's a good one! I'm always curious what people resolve to do. Thanks, Robin :) I'll have a think whether any of my attempts at self-imporvement in the new year are funny (funny amusing, not strange!)

THE EDGE OF BELIEF will be an anthology of speculative fiction with a
Christian focus/worldview. It is open to submissions of Science Fiction,
Fantasy and Horror, as long as the stories abide by the established
standards. If you are interested in submitting a story for
consideration for this anthology, please read the following carefully!

• The word count must be between 2,000 and 4,000. (We are aiming for
a word count total of about 50,000 for the whole book.)
• A "happy ending" is not necessary, but the story does need a
satisfactory resolution of some sort.
• No onstage sex.
• No foul language.
• No glorification of evil. (We realize that a story may have a
denouement where it appears that evil has won, but individual battles
are not the war.)
• No gore/violence strictly for shock value (The Editor is the only
judge of this, and his word is final.)
• No fan-fiction or overly-derivative works (i.e., no Narnia
read-alikes, no Star Wars Holy Clones, etc.)
• Previously published works may not have been published within one
year of submission to the publisher, and the author must have all rights
to the story, in writing.

Submissions are open until July 1, 2008. The publisher reserves the
right to cancel the project without recourse, should he determine that
there are not enough suitable submissions by August 1, 2008.

The projected release date for THE EDGE OF BELIEF is October 2008.

etc., go to

"Ultimately, however, we wish to create a new standard for secular books by closely scrutinizing the books we select for publication, and only publishing those books which, although exciting and compelling, do not drag the reader's mind through the muck. We do not seek to censor other publishers or presses. We only wish to provide a place for authors to publish books which other presses may see as too "sweet" or not "edgy" enough, as well as a place for discerning readers to find such literature."

As a writer who is a Christian I like to point out when I can that it's important to do your homework. The above comes straight from the Honey Locust site. It's admirable that unlike the CBA (Christian Booksellers Association) that they mention they are reaching for a niche market and say so.

My work, though written from my own views as a Christian, would probably never meet their standards. Yours might though. Again, I do appreciate them coming out and saying what they are and even posting guidelines. Some other Christian "niche" markets might do well to do the same.

Subject: ENCOUNTER theme list

Dear authors,

Happy almost-spring to you! I am going to enjoy the early daylight
savings change this Sunday! :) I like my sunny days to last as long as
possible!

I must tell you that I've intended to send out this theme list for a
couple of weeks now. I've been delayed because I've been afforded the
opportunity to share my input and editorial skills on some other teen
projects upcoming at Standard Publishing. That is exciting but threw me
off my usual routine!

Now I'm back at the task at hand and ready to share with you the great
topics we have lined up for Spring 2009. We have issues about
friendship, ways to meet God, and trusting God in difficult
circumstances.

The theme list is attached and pasted below. Please note that all
manuscripts will be due by May 1. I will send a short response via
email within a week's time of you sending your work. If you DON'T hear
back from me in that time, please contact me again. It may mean that
your manuscript did not reach my inbox for some reason.

One bit of technology issue to share: please note that if you have the
new Microsoft Word 2007, the documents you create will end in .docx and
are unopenable and unreadable for our computers. The conversion
programs offered don't appear to help right now either. To alleviate
the matter, please look at the options you have as you save the
document and save them as an older version. We appreciate it.

I do have some notes and thoughts to share with you as you write this
quarter and in the future:

If you are submitting a manuscript that you originally wrote several
years ago, read through it again before submitting and adjust some
details as needed to make sure that things are up-to-date. For example,
if your teen characters are on the phone, they would probably need to
talk on cell phones as most teens do these days. And if they are
listening to music, CDs are still hanging around but teens are more
often listening to MP3s on their computers or devices such as iPods.
Details such as these show relevance to teen readers. Details that are
out of date are red flags to me as I consider pieces.

You might want to check out some sites online to keep up with teen
culture and make sure that the characters in your stories are talking
and acting like modern-day teens. One blog I like to read is
YPulse.com. It's not a Christian site, but many youth leaders as well
as others read its content. It's a site with the purpose of helping
people who are trying to reach teens find out about the current trends
and news items that involve adolescents. There is a lot of information
there, but looking at some discussions and news items may spark a story
idea for you.

If you are able to keep informed about what's going on in the world of
students, you will find out what they face and can make sure that your
writing is addressing those needs from God's perspective. We want them
to continue hearing God's stance on topics so that they are equipped to
make good choices in their actions. Putting a love for God above all
will help all of us approach the difficult choices in life with a heart
of obedience and peace.

If you have ideas of how to work a current event or topic you've read
about in the news into something listed on our theme list, I'd love to
read it. Each quarter we need a variety of articles, from nonfiction
tips to realistic fiction to testimonies to teen interviews to quizzes
and fun items. If there's a way that we can also bring a biblical
approach to help teens face a current topic, we want to do that as well.

Thank you for your continued desire to use your writing to connect
students with Jesus. We desire that at ENCOUNTER and enjoy your heart
for doing so as well.

Sincerely,
Kelly

ENCOUNTER--The Magazine
Spring 2009 quarter
All submissions due: May 1, 2008

All about us: ENCOUNTER--The Magazine encourages students in junior
high and high school in their relationships with Jesus. ENCOUNTER
corresponds to the topics used in the Young Teen and High School
curriculum by Standard Publishing. Students using this curriculum will
be studying the themes and Scriptures listed below. ENCOUNTER is
designed to further apply these topics to teens' lives.

How to use this theme list: Please read the Scriptures and points
listed for each issue so you know what the students will be learning in
class. But it's not required to mention the Scriptures in your
manuscripts.

How to submit your manuscript: Send each manuscript via e-mail to
encounter@standardp ub.com. Send it as a Microsoft Word attachment or
paste it directly into the body of the e-mail. In your e-mail subject
line, please put the issue number for which your manuscript is intended.

Make the connection: We accept both fiction and nonfiction, including
quizzes, testimonies, and interviews. Teens look for authenticity- -all
types of manuscripts should speak directly to teens using dialogue,
situations, and illustrations that relate to them. The bottom line: be
real.

Unit One: Friendship
Issue 1 Peer Pressure
Mar 8 Scripture: Exodus 32:1-9, 35; Proverbs 29:25; Romans
12:2
The point: Look at the types of peer pressure people face and biblical
strategies to resist
ungodly pressures.

Issue 2 Loneliness
Mar 15 Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-18; Psalm 73:21-26
The point: Loneliness can cause us to neglect our basic needs and to
separate ourselves
from people who can help us. God will help us conquer loneliness-- He
loves us when no
one else will, He takes us where no one else can, and He gives us what
no one else can.

Issue 3 Close Christian Friends
Mar 22 Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:1-4; 1 Samuel 19:1-3; 1 Samuel
20:16, 17, 42;
Philemon 8-16; Hebrews 10:24
The point: True Christian friends are invaluable. Christian friends are
committed to one
another, warn one another of danger, and include God in their
relationship. Evaluate your
current friendships and your own performance as a true friend.

Issue 4 Cliques
Mar 29 Scripture: Acts 9:26-28; Romans 15:5-7
The point: God can bless us through new and unexpected friendships. Add
someone new
to your circle of friends.

Unit Two: Meeting God
Issue 5 Meeting God Through Prayer
Apr 5 Scripture: Matthew 6:9-13; Matthew 7:7-12
The point: Prayer connects us to God. Jesus told us that in prayer we
need to
acknowledge God for who He is, admit to God our struggles with sin, and
ask God for
what we need (not just want!). Connect to God in prayer each day.

Issue 6 Meeting God Through the Lord's Supper
Apr 12 Scripture: Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 10:16, 17; 1
Corinthians 11:17-29
The point: When we take the Lord's Supper, we are proclaiming our most
important
beliefs. Through the Lord's Supper, we remember that Jesus died to take
our guilt, we
proclaim the unity of all Christians, and we look ahead to the
completion of God's work.
Do something to make communion more meaningful to you.

Issue 7 Meeting God Through Fasting
Apr 19 Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18; 9:14, 15; Luke 2:36, 37
The point: We can show our hunger for God by fasting.
Fasting is placing total faith in
God for sustenance. Fasting is done in secret when we
need God's presence. Fasting
shows that we desire God above all other needs. Plan to
fast sometime in the near future.

Issue 8 Meeting God Through Worship
Apr 26 Scripture: Psalm 95:1-7; Psalm 96:1-9
The point: In worship we proclaim God's greatness, reflect upon God's
work, and give ourselves more fully to God. Take steps to make worship
more meaningful.

Issue 9 Meeting God Through Fellowship
May 3 Scripture: Philippians 1:3-11; 1 John 1:3-7
The point: Fellowship is about sharing a common goal with our brothers
and sisters and
striving toward maturity together. In fellowship we thank God for His
grace through
Jesus and revere His holiness. Strive to make your fellowship with
Christians deeper.

Unit Three: Trusting God
Issue 10 Trusting God When I Feel Anxious
May 10 Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34; Luke 12:22-31; Philippians
4:6
The point: Faith in God can overcome worry. Release a worrisome
situation into
God's hands.

Issue 11 Trusting God When I Feel Like a Failure
May 17 Scripture: Judges 6:11-16; Judges 7:1-22; 1 Samuel
30:1-15
The point: We can learn to overcome setbacks. Decide to tackle a task
that once had
defeated you.

Issue 12 Trusting God When I Feel Hurt and Used
May 24 Scripture: 2 Samuel 16:5-14; Romans 15:1-7
The point: To overcome our own hurt, we can encourage others who are
hurting. To
continue on after we feel used by others, we can perform acts of
selfless service.

Issue 13 Trusting God When I Feel Rejected
May 31 Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:1-6; 1 Samuel 8:1-22
The point: When we are rejected, we can do these things: recognize our
limitations;
separate our personal feelings from the issue at hand; seek God's
perspective on the
issue; and allow the Lord to work through others if He chooses them
instead.

Blessings,
James

Yes but what any of these publishing houses fail to re-iterate is that each and every one of them are affiliated with the ECPA and CBA which means they write for a large yet conservative evangelical nich market that has guidelines a writer should know about before submitting and thusly being rejected forewith. To learn of the conventions just go to their writer's guidelines. Each one say they are affiliated here and some even go as far as to say if your MS isn't written from a conservative evangelical worldview, it will be rejected at once. Here's a helpful link that explains what CBA and ECPA affiliations expect from publishers affiliated with them. link

Most of these publishers use the ECPA's Manuscript service to get their MS's ensuring what they receive is from a conservative evangelical worldview. The odd thing is when these publishers solicit for manuscripts, as they're doing now, they never mention they serve this market which only leaves authors to wonder why they were turned down.

How sad! :(

The houses listed above serve a niche market but they won't say so unless asked. It is listed on their sites though so make sure and check it out.

And yes, they can get in any bookstore. Specifically CBA and ECPA affiliated Christian bookstores. They have distributors too. My goodness they're one of the biggest niche markets out there. Just know that if you get rejected, it wasn't because your work wasn't Christian or even poorly written or a bad story. It was because it didn't fit their niche. Read the guidelines. Most of them post them on their site.

Kelly Mortimer made this announcement--

Wanted to remind you we have two unbelievable opportunities available thru eBay auctions to get your work edited by an agent, or read by an editor!!! Auction ends soon!!!!

To bid, go to http://www.ebay.com/
.

(Tamela is my agent and works for Hartline Literary)

Literary Agent Tamela Hancock Murray with the Hartline Agency will give your first chapter a line edit. Tamela's a great agent, and a wonderful person.

To bid, go to http://www.ebay.com/

In the "search" box type:

Literary Agent Tamela Hancock Murray 1st Chapter Edit

All proceeds go to the Robin Miller Mortgage Fund (minus fees).

The auctions say "PayPal Only." I couldn't change it, but a check in the mail is preferred, as PayPal charges fees.

If you'd like to help a fellow Christian writer who's in dire circumstances, all one-time gifts are appreciated. I'm also looking for monthly donors. At this time, there are 9 ACFW members who've pledged monthly for 8 more months. The total is only $319.00. C'mon people. Is that really the best we can do? Nine out of how many members? Sheesh! Win my undying gratitude, and let God bless you for being a cheerful giver.

Please distribute this info to every loop you can!

Thanks to all who've donated to the cause, and a special thanks to Deb and Tamela. You gals rock!

Smiles,

Absolutely. This is a great list for those who are called to write within the guidelines of the evangelical Christian publishers -- however, for those who write for the rest of the Christian market, these publishers likely will not look at your work -- extremely unlikely.

SPIRIT-LED WRITER
Volume 7, Issue 2
March/April 2008

Welcome to the latest issue of SPIRIT-LED WRITER
Magazine!

WELCOME!

As springtime slowly emerges around the USA, it
brings with it the familiar signs of road
construction. Flashing arrows, detour signs,
and roadblocks are popping up all over town. A
few weeks ago I attended the Mount Hermon
Christian Writers Conference in California and
experienced a few roadblocks physically,
mentally, and spiritually.

Prior to the conference, materials that I
needed to complete a writing project were
delayed in shipping. Then unexpected company
arrived, distracting me from writing. During
the confrence I struggled to hear God's voice.
Why was I there? What did He want me to learn?
After the conference my flight was canceled due
to heavy rains--a blessing, really, since it
gave me a whole day to process what I learned
at Mount Hermon, and quiet time alone with God.

What kind of roadblocks are you struggling with
today? Lisa Christine reminds us that faith is
a key part of any writer's life in her article
based on Hebrews 11. Or perhaps your roadblock
is fear--fear of writing about a controversial
subject (such as mental health--see Laura
Farrar's article on how to tackle this subject),
of reliving strong emotions (check out Ruth
Schiffmann's article on emotions, even if you
are not targeting teens), or lacking creativity.
Whatever your roadblock, God can get you past
it. God will provide!

Write those stories, articles, and poems,
submit them to critique groups, contests,
editors, and agents, and watch God work! (We'd
love to receive your queries for writing
related articles!) You *will* be blessed,
SPIRIT-LED WRITER!
