I found it on accident through a google search for writing sites back when I was in middle school. I've kinda lurked in the shadows ever since then.

I was googling abdominal stab wounds (for a story, really, I swear). And found the "Story Research" forum. Read back through some of that, thought it was interesting, and decided to appear!

Over the years I've come across the forums here when googling various stuff writing-related. Most recent googles were about agents and a specific publisher.

I found Absolute Write through an agent that I queried. She (sadly) wasn't interested in my book, however she recommended I check out AW and I'm so glad I did!

I discovered Absolute Writing via a friend (Who is not a member), who recommended I come here for advice on publishing/beta readers.

You're like a Stephen King short story.

I returned to book writing about two years ago, and every third person I'd meet would say, "Oh, you should check out Absolute Write." "Hey, have you heard of Absolute Write?" "You can find good forums on Absolute Write." It was like they were talking to each other when I wasn't there, these strangers, or they were mind-melding or heeding a voice in the sky. So I figured I better join before THEY approached me saying, "We TOLD you to join" and bad things happened. So, now I'm here and it's nice so far.
Plus a friend told me.

I was researching gunshot wounds to the chest causing a collapsed lung and shattered ribs, as none of my battles who'd been in combat were awake at the time, and one of the entries that came up was this site. I didn't know this site was exactly what I'd been looking for but here I am.

I went on a writer's retreat and my friends were members. They kept talking about this site, so I figured... why the heck not? So I got the site and checked it out. Wasn't till I came back the second time I saw how useful it really is.

Greetings,
I was referred to this site by Mandy Hubbard from Emerald City Literary Agency, sort of a consolation prize that came with her rejection letter to my Query. Feeling most fortunate to have landed here though. Just trying figure it all out.

Kevin Hearne, author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, suggested it to me on Twitter.

I was referred by her as well. Here I was thinking I was special, haha, but I really do appreciate her sending me here. I'm really excited to talk with other writers.

I was looking for a forum online about creative writing and eventually found this place.

Earth, USA,
I was tooling around google+, Amazon, Facebook and a couple of dozen other places, and got thirsty. Someone suggested I stop by the water cooler, and the name got me.

Being over 60 and retired, I had come to believe that the stories I've created, and shared, over the years would never find voice in a book. That no longer seems an absolute, if I can actually learn to write, and tell them in a way that makes for a good read. The information and feedback that one can find here is probably priceless, but how would I know, I just lurk in the corner, usually.

I've stumbled across AW enough while googling writing technique questions that it was a familiar name to me. However, I didn't feel like I was a real enough of a writer to join. I have a writing friend who lives halfway across the country who is in a few writing groups that meet in person, and I live in the sticks, with no groups I can find who meet within an hour of me. Searching for "critique partners" and "writing friends" I found this post: http://thewritelife.com/find-a-critique-partner/
I'm about 6 months to a year away from needing a beta reader for my work, but I am beyond needing people who understand the modern life of writing, who I can turn to for advice, and share some of the nuggets of information I have ingested over the years from writing.
I am long winded. Have I mentioned that yet? Because I notice my post is, more than likely, too long.

I was previously a member on a terrible writing forum and I had several very unpleasant experiences when trying to post my work. The rules for posting were PG-rated, at most. I had one piece of my work, that I was particularly happy with and seeking legitimate input on, removed from the board by a mod because it was "overtly pornographic". Now, I'm not an erotica writer or porn writer or whatever you want to call it by ANY means. I made a brief reference to an oral sex experience that occurred prior to the setting of my story. In other words, it did not even occur in the story itself. When "describing" this experience, I used literally thirteen words (I counted after it was removed from the board), none of which were slang or whatever you want to call it. Basically, I referenced it as cleanly as possible, and described it in a way that unless the reader was familiar with oral sex, it would have gone over their head (for instance if a ten year old had found his way to the board and was reading the story). Anyway, another member of the forum who had read the work before it was removed PMd me, complimenting me on the work and referring me to this forum, which I can already tell is a much better place for people who are serious about writing.

Similar story to yours Brock with the site that states: "the oldest writers' community on the net - if you are serious about your writing, we cordially invite you to join us." The offending word was bloody, as in a bloody knife. It was termed sacrilegious because - apparently - it references Jesus on the Cross, e.g. bloody hell. This I had to have explained to me because, apparently, my experience is not as broad as real writers. I was nervously preparing a chapter for George Martin to read during his visit to Poland. And because the issue was important to me, to have a celebrity author give me a critique, I pushed the issue with the site owner. For my trouble I was banned from the site and subsequently harassed/stalked by the offending mod across multiple business platforms (I worked in PR).

All on account of the word bloody. I came here and my problem was solved. The owner was kind enough to let me break the rule as a brand new member seeking immediate feedback, which I received in spades and all of it was beneficial. No one complained about the word bloody, however, so I guess that puts all of us into the serious site's opposing category of "not serious writers" like George Martin, for example.
