Does anyone here know a professional editor by the name of Lynda Lotman, and if so what do you know about her and her editing skills and fees?

I'm certain that you checked her website www.manuscriptediting.com and on www.apawriting.com/apaeditors_l-q.htm. She is also a member of this esteemed site - you can find her posts (use search).

Best regards,
Robert

Book Editing Associates / book-editing.com

Hi all. I'm quite new around here and I'm hoping I can get some advice :) I'm considering using the services of an online editorial agency. Anyone ever used Book editing Associate.com's services ? Has any of you ever worked with Rosanne Catalano? She's a freelance editor for the mentionned network.

Thanks a lot :)

I can find a single book with her as author. It was published by Lulu, so it's self-pubbed.

I'd be critical, usually a prospective editor will answer questions from you or even do an edit of sample pages. If she can't produce titles of p[ublished books she has edited, then I'd pass.

Regards,
Scott

I found her by googling the name. She seems to edit an e-zine about cats as well.

Hi guys and thanks. Yes, the link is just right.

I did google her name but I've noticed that she has a namesake who has a site called the cat meow for writers( the namesake is the one who actually wrote the book on Lulu). They strangely don't work in the same field ( the editor I want to work with specialises in young adult and christian novels whereas her namesake does more peotry). So I'm a bit wary... I've read in some threads that some scammers would usually use reputable people's name ...

Updating cuz I'm OCD like that: Ms. Catalano has rejoined. http://www.book-editing.com/bios/rosanne-cornbrooks-catalano/index.shtml

If an editor is booked for more than 4 months in advance, I often remove their bios from the site because they're not taking submissions until their workloads lighten.
and/or
Editors sometimes take off a chunk of time (e.g., maternity leave, travel, illness), and I remove their bios so submitters don't get ticked when I inform them that the editor they decided on isn't taking submissions.

Blessings,
Lynda Lotman

No editor is right for every author. It has to be a good match.

I'd suggest you ask yourself: Have you heard of her? (And what have you heard?) Have you heard of the authors whose books she's edited? Have you read the books? What did you think of them? Why would you want to hire an editor, what outcomes would you expect, would it be a worthwhile investment?

For me -- I've never heard of her. I've never heard of the authors she lists on her page; most of the books appear to be small press publications, and are older works (1999 - 2002) with Amazon rankings in the >1,000,000 range. Her rates are "3 - 8 cents per word" for a copyedit and critique; for a 100K word novel that works out to $3000 - $8000, and I don't think a small press publication (were it to eventuate) would earn the author enough in royalties to recover their investment in the editor's fees.

That's me. YMMV.

Once again I am here to say "What Unimportant said" and to add my amplification on that theme.

When looking for a manuscript evaluation or freelance editing or book doctoring or anything similar, a minimum requirement should be that the person you're working with should have professional-level experience in the specific markets in which you hope to publish.

So if your goal is publishing, say, a self-help book with a Big Six New York publisher, the person with whom you are going to invest a bunch of money should have the experience of publishing their own self-help book with a Big Six house, or of being an editor of self-help books at a Big Six house.

If your goal is publishing a scholarly monograph with a university press, the person with whom you're going to be investing should have professional experience of writing or editing scholarly monographs for a university press. And so on and so on.
