Y'know what's every bit as hard as killing your darlings?

Purging your bookshelves.

Fortunately, I haven't figured out how to end up with more books, otherwise you can bet that's where I'd be.

Yes, this is difficult. I've done it.

I used to collect every single book I had read, but those days are over.

The Kindle has won the war.

:Hug2:I've had to do it twice. Hated it. In this house, there are walled bookshelves in every room. (Not on every wall). With space for double-shelving. I designed them myself.

I've gone from just over 3000 printed books to just over 1000, and that's with constant culling and giving away.

Almost all my books are in storage, so there's real incentive of several sorts to keep reducing the numbers.

One thing I've found helps me is to sort into
  • I'll definitely read this again. Hell, maybe I'll stop sorting books and read it now.
  • I could read this again, although I might not.
  • If I want to read this again, every library in the US will have a copy.
  • This paperback is getting yellow and the glue's about to fail.
  • Why did I ever buy this?
  • How did they shrink the print to this size?

I try hard to keep only the first two categories. We're anticipating a move and I'm thinking about losing the entire paperback library, which is probably close to a thousand books. Can I do it? We'll see.
