This one really hits home with me: I graduated from this school 30-odd years ago. And still have family in the area.

The good people of Aztec, New Mexico would rather you believe that nothing bad happens in this bucolic rural county seat. I can't tell you how the high school is now, but three decades ago it was an uneasy mix of Anglo, Latino, and Native American cultures, added to the usual jock/geek/stoner/goth/normie teenager conflicts.

San Juan County has high unemployment. The petroleum and ranching industries are in decline. The large Republican voting bloc predictably went for Trump, for many of the same reasons other counties voted for Trump. There's a lot of economic stress hiding in plain sight.

Hopefully we'll find out what brought this shooting on.
