it is considered a sample chapter and if you stand behind what you have written. Then, by all means, share it and let people read and get hooked on your book.

Don't know about posting opening chapter on-line for a self-published novel - others can better advise on that, but I love your title and trailer.

I guess you have your own reasons for going the self-publishing route instead of an Agent/Publisher one.

I also see you have asked many interesting questions over the years and I wondered if you've thought about posting the first chapter in the relative Share-Your-Work forum? Sometimes a thick skin is needed over there, but...

On Amazon you can "Look Inside" books that are for sale - you can also download for free the first part of the book... so it seems that Amazon believes giving a sneak peek to be a valid marketing tool.

On a bit of a tangent - is there a forum here regarding marketing self published works?

I have the first chapters of all my published works (from a Big 5 publisher, a small press, and self-published) up on my website. Make sure you include buy links, so when someone reads it and loves it, it's easy for them to purchase. :)

It all depends on where you're going to post your first chapter. There are literally millions of websites out there. Many achieve minimal traffic. There are no guarantees that your post will be viewed. If you can find a site which brings hundreds of views of your first chapter, please let us know. You'll have found the Holy Grail for writers. Otherwise, I would respectfully suggest that you're wasting your time. Far better to investigate other means of "getting the word out" about your work.

As soon as my book cover is finished I will look into the Share-Your-Work forum.

There are two forums where you can get such advice. May be others too.

The second is for all kinds of publishing channels, including self-pub.

The self publishing room is for questions about self publishing, not promotion. Please don't use it for questions regarding promotion.

As soon as my book cover is finished I will look into the Share-Your-Work forum.

Share Your Work is a place to post your work for critique, not promotion. You don't need a finished book cover to post an extract there. If you're not looking for a critique to help you revise and improve it, please don't post in SYW.

Thank you!

A lot of the initial post in that thread is about ensuring you publish a professional, thoughtfully edited and designed product, Laer. It's not focused on promotion, but on being a good publisher.

I get your point. Before you promote something, you must be sure to have something worth promoting. And that's what that forum is about.
