Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember, and if you remember, then follow..."

We're moving into a new season this month, so it's time for new (and old) goals, writing and otherwise. For some it's also time to think about NaNo, which is a mere two months off. Whatever your goals, state them here and we'll all help cheer each other on!

To get us started, here are mine:

1. Explore NYC with at least two more jaunts to places I've never been - 0 of 2
2. Read five books - 0 of 5
3. Get at least 10k words written on rough draft of Book #5 - currently 3,306
4. Create more graphics for upcoming social media push for Book #2 - 15 of 10
5. Nail down promo dates for Book #2 (cover reveal, book trailer, firm release date) with publisher
6. Find a new NYC sublet (I have to give up my current place by mid-October)

Hello, September.

I am still sick and I don't know how long that is going to last so I'm giving myself the month off on daily writing goals. If I write or edit that day, yay! If I don't, that's okay too.

I have three chapters left in the current pass of this book, and I really hope to get those finished. Game planning, as always, and some book reading, but otherwise anything else will be a bonus.

I am currently reading The Hidden City. Once I've finished that, I'm not sure what I will move onto. Maybe something more modern :p I have been enjoying my trip into old school, lighthearted (if flawed) epic fantasy though. Modern epic fantasy tends to be too dark for me at the moment.

1. Read five books.
2. Edit three chapters.
3. Game planning.

Hello September and AW people. :)

I have a more ambitious list this month than for the past few, because I've decided the only way I'll ever get anywhere with my writing is by actually writing. Also, I'm doing a poetry class this term and one of the assessment items is a collection of 12 poems and as a person who is mostly familiar with poetry where it intersects with heavy metal (i.e. song lyrics), I'm going to need some practice.

Anyway, here's September's list:

  • Read 4 books (at least one must be nonfiction).
  • Write 45000 words (1500 per day). Done: 1,268 / 45000.
  • Write 2 poems per week. Week 1: 2 / 2.
  • Stay current with all my study-related tasks.
  • Post at least 4 things on my blog.

Spring has sprung here - Yay. Following on from my last post in the previous thread, my goals this month are:

1. Write first draft of a 4,000 word short story
2. Write two chapters of sci-fi novel
3. Read 4 books
4. Write 1 blog post per week for a total of 4.

I've got this! And so do the rest of you ;)

I'm starting the month with one complete, because the 3-Day Novel Contest was the first weekend of September, and the reason I'm posting a little late :)

September Goals:
[X] Participate in the 3-Day Novel Contest.
[ ] Finish formatting the eBook I've been stalling on.
[ ] Get a mailing list set-up.
[ ] Figure out a title/theme for the reprint short story collection I'm pulling together.
[ ] Finish the change I want to make to one of my novelleas (flipping some secondary characters around).
[ ] Do edits on the E shorty story, whenever they come in.

Constant Goals:
[ ] Changing sleep cycle; focus on night.
[ ] Clean my office.
[35] Write 1K words a day (for 52 weeks).

Probably the library.
*wanders in*

I missed this room...

I'm a little late-starting this month, but seeing as I'm on another continent I don't mind much. But there's always work to do!

Goals for (the rest of) September:

*write 10k of a novel
*write 10 blog posts
*read 5 books
*finish deploying my new website
*complete 3 DayZero goals
*keep up with school stuff (starting my last year of this master's degree! Woo!)
*play video games (the most commonly neglected goal on my lists...)

Great job so far, everyone! :)

Never too late, VP Benni! Welcome!

Hope everyone's first week of September has been productive (and if not productive, at least enjoyable). I got a LOT of reading done this week: Elie Wiesel's NIGHT, Donnie Eichar's DEAD MOUNTAIN: THE UNTOLD TRUE STORY OF THE DYATLOV PASS INCIDENT and ASHES UNDER WATER: THE SS EASTLAND AND THE SHIPWRECK THAT SHOOK AMERICA - a veritable nonfic festival. I made two more graphics for Book #2's promo push, got my questions answered by my publisher insofar as dates, and I will put a good faith deposit against a new sublet tomorrow, so I'm calling #6 done, too (and it's a major load off my mind). That should free me up to get some writing done on my next day off, instead of reading endless apartment rental ads.

1. Explore NYC with at least two more jaunts to places I've never been - 0 of 2
2. Read five books - 3 of 5
3. Get at least 10k words written on rough draft of Book #5 - currently 3,306
4. Create more graphics for upcoming social media push for Book #2 - 12 of 15
5. Nail down promo dates for Book #2 (cover reveal, book trailer, firm release date) with publisher DONE
6. Find a new NYC sublet (I have to give up my current place by mid-October) DONE

Goodness, are we already ten days into September? Well then.

My attention wanders too fast to predict exactly what each goal will be, so we're setting generic but measurable targets.

1. Read 1500 pages weekly. These must be pages of a book, either printed or digital. Fiction and nonfiction both count, published/self-published/posted online and downloaded to Nook all count. But I need to get back in the habit of reading. I think this is a better target than saying I must read x number of books, since I read everything from middle-grade fantasy to adult nonfiction, and those take wildly different amounts of time to read.
2. Write 5000 words weekly. That means writing, not revising or plotting or character sketching. None of those count for this target.
3. While we're on the subject, submit two works during September. I'm putting down two because I have two pieces in mind, with target markets for both of them. One of them is due in exactly a week and I'm very excited--it's a specfic poem and those are hard to find markets for.
4. Keep my desk clean and clear so I can work at it consistently.
5. Go to two martial arts classes a week. Not necessarily of my level (black belt)--I still have a lot of catchup to do. This goal, naturally, will be put on hold without blame in case of injury.
6. Two hours a week revising/editing. This is the hardest thing to find time for, because it requires a solid block of time in which to do it, and I rarely get home before 8PM during the week and then have to be up at 8AM to get to work on time.

I am failing spectacularly on going to bed on time. It didn't help that I let my wake-up time slip an hour or two while I was on vacation. Ah well, back at it.

I also got through the "exciting" part--i.e. outlining--for the short story I'm working on this week. I'm banking on my write-in Friday to get it done and get me my 5k.

Checking in on my list and also changing a few things because I'm switching from ambitious to 'start somewhere that gives me positive reinforcement most of the time'. I don't know if that's exactly the way to put it. It means I'm changing from the ambitious 'write 45000 words' goal to trying to consistently write 500 words per day for the rest of the month. I probably should write a blog post about that or something.

1. Read 4 books (at least one must be nonfiction). Done: 1 / 4.
2. Write 12,000 words: Done: 3,456 / 12,000
3. Write 2 poems per week. Done: 4 / 10(?).
4. Stay current with all my study-related tasks.
5. Post at least 4 things on my blog. Done: 0 / 4.

Great to see everyone on this thread making progress towards their goals. Go for it, everyone!

Ooooo - EMaree quoted HAMILTON! Mad props! JetFueledCar, I saw your thread elsewhere on AW and hope you're feeling less overwhelmed.

I've been uber-tired and on the walking wounded list this week - sprained my little toe by banging it against a chair leg, then did something to my upper back by PICKING UP A FREAKING TEA KETTLE. Recovering but so glad this week is nearly over, and that a week-long vacay from my show is a mere seven days away!

The week started out nicely, though - I took a trip to The Cloisters in upper Manhattan, a division of the Metropolitan Museum which focuses on medieval art. Got to see the actual Unicorn Tapestries, which I didn't know were in the collection, and I confess I caught my breath when I walked into the gallery and spotted them. The museum has several peaceful gardens, and to continue with my meditative mood, I walked through Fort Tryon Park (more gardens!) rather than head straight back to my Hell's Kitchen digs. So that took care of my NYC goal for the month.

I also finished my reading goal for the month, completing Carrie Fisher's THE PRINCESS DIARIST (slight but amusing) and Peter Zuckerman's BURIED IN THE SKY: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE SHERPA CLIMBERS ON K2'S DEADLIEST DAY (a story that certainly needs to be told, although it felt a little cursory in places and the author's decision to leap back and forth in the chronology of events was ill-advised, IMO).

And to complete the completing, I finished up my promo graphics for Book #2 - in fact, did a couple more than I'd planned. But as far as the writing goes - not a word written. Hoping to focus on that this week.

1. Explore NYC with at least two more jaunts to places I've never been - 2 of 2 DONE
2. Read five books - 5 of 5 DONE
3. Get at least 10k words written on rough draft of Book #5 - currently 3,306
4. Create more graphics for upcoming social media push for Book #2 - 15 of 15 DONE
5. Nail down promo dates for Book #2 (cover reveal, book trailer, firm release date) with publisher DONE
6. Find a new NYC sublet (I have to give up my current place by mid-October) DONE

Halfway through the month, folks! Let's keep pushing forward!

Apparently any editing was a little optimistic of me. Health is better, but I don't think I'm going to try and push the chapter editing into the last week and a half. I might just continue to take it easy, read books, play games, sort when I have the energy. I might try and get a story edited or I might not. I've done a little writing on the WIP, and a little game planning.

I have been reading! I finished The Hidden City. Then, keeping in the same era, I read some Anne McCaffrey: Freedom's Landing, Powers That Be, and Power Lines. I'm going down the library today to get the third (since I don't own it, but the library does (the only one in the series it has)) and I might try to get out some books from this decade at least while I'm there :p

1. Read five books. 4/5
2. Edit three chapters.
3. Game planning. Yes.

Big news this week: my show announced its closing date of 12/30/17. I very nearly shouted "YES!" when the lead producer told the company. My reasons are many and completely selfish, but the big ones are (1) only 3 more months of enduring life in crowded, dirty, noisy, expensive midtown Manhattan, (2) I won't have to find another sublet at the end of the year, and (3) I will be going home where I can leverage personal contacts to pimp my books. By the time the show closes I will have been in NYC just a few weeks shy of a year, and while it's been a year of very good money and some personal triumphs, I'm ready for it to be over. Fortunately, the entire production is on a week-long (paid) hiatus starting Monday, so our two stars can get some vacation time, and I'm headed home just as soon as our Sunday matinee is over. Home for a week! And then home for good at the end of the year! I'm so excited I can hardly stand it.

With all that going on, I actually wrote this week - not much, but it beats the nothing I wrote earlier this month. There's no chance I'll make that 10k writing goal, but I'm going to leave it in place for next month. I'm tempted right now to do NaNo even though I'll probably fail, but I wrote the additional 500 or so words this week on a dare, and I'm thinking NaNo might unplug things further. Only downside is that I have to move into my final sublet at the beginning of that month, but hey - new surroundings might inspire me even further.

1. Explore NYC with at least two more jaunts to places I've never been - 2 of 2 DONE
2. Read five books - 5 of 5 DONE
3. Get at least 10k words written on rough draft of Book #5 - currently 3,866
4. Create more graphics for upcoming social media push for Book #2 - 15 of 15 DONE

Only one more week left of September, folks! Let's keep pushing ahead. EMaree, I'm fascinated by the whole roller derby thing. Do you blog about it? I would totally read a blog about roller derby.

Nothing odd bout dat, iz dere??? :p
[X] Survive family interactions
[ ] Submit a short story to a place to do the thing (just one) I am still working on the short story for the place I have in mind, and luckily I have made oodles of wunderbar friendses all up in here who are willing to help me out with the spot checks and the editses! I love it.
[YEP] SURVIVE!

And the month ain't even over and and and and and I think I made a new meatspace friend, and I'm hosting D&D today (and not DMing :D), and I'm actually not exhausted or particularly sad or grumpy for like, once, evar! I may be ten hours behind on my goals in the run up to NaNo proper, but I also organised my local Library and Museum to join and host spaces for Wrimos, I am coordinating with my fellow Elsewhere MLs and just, like, yay, and stuff! :D
