Even if your politicians are arses about it, this is a decisive vote that shows that LGBTQetc. are not isolated nor reviled by the majority, but are supported by most Australians.

Well, I don't mind admitting that I'm crying. I was fine until I saw a photo of Penny Wong in tears.

I know there's still a way to go before my darling friends can get married, but the yes vote is marvellous news.

In fact, looking at the ABS's map, Western Sydney is the only place with a concentrated no-vote. Otherwise, a few rural seats in Qld and one or two in outer Melbourne voted no.

I hope we weren't one of the no voting electorates. *goes to check*

I'm glad to hear that the yes votes took it so decisively.

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that the politicians will follow through and do what is right.

I’ve never believed it is wise to put anybody’s civil rights to a popular vote.

Still, this is heartening to see. Good luck to all of you.

There was a lot of resistance to the survey for just this reason. The whole thing is a failing prime minister's sop to the nutty right.

Sounds like he got the vote he deserved then.

ETA: Which sounds kind of petty. I am in fact thrilled that Australians voted so decisively for marriage equality.

Petty is fine. The whole thing was entirely unnecessary and hurtful and mean-spirited and self-serving and vile.

I'm just glad it worked out the way it did.

I would like to edit the title of this thread. I think we're through the worst of the clown vortex.

I saw the news on CNN and headed straight here. Awesome for a great margin! Best wishes for a final yes vote in your parliament. Onward!

I am perfectly prepared to be petty about Tony Abbott, ex-PM and parliamentary leader of the 'no' vote.

    His electorate was 75% yes.

Ha! Awesome! Please if they'll now vote him out at the next election? And he'd better bloody vote Yes if there's a conscience vote to properly reflect his electorate.

The entire campaign, the No vote's argument was: "This isn't only about SSM. This is about 'political correctness gone mad' and gender morphing in schools and a whole bunch of other shit we don't like."

Now, the No camp is: "The silent majority is still against all those things. This survey was only about SSM."

"Edit thread" then "Go advanced." It'll give you the option to edit the thread title.

See: FAQ: How to Edit the Title of A Thread You Started

The thread started in August though, so I am fairly sure you'll need help. Let me know what the new title should be, and I shall emend the current one.

I think this is the issue. I can't see an Edit Thread button.

I'm dreadfully unimaginative. How about just the Australian Towards Marriage Equality 2017 Thread?

    Edit: never mind, found it.

    Same here.

Congratulations Aussies! Keep the pressure up to make sure he actually changes the law or gets voted out*. And enjoy the partying.

*Maybe he'll have a puerile rage quit tantrum and you won't even have to vote him out.

If there were an election held tomorrow, I suspect they'd lose in a landslide.

God, I really wish there were an election being held tomorrow!
