Getting out of the cultural-centric bubble and into some decadent relativism.

Starting with the Chinese point of view, as available on their CCTV news service. In English.

I think the list should grow.

Entertainment -- sometimes getting to know a culture is helped by watching their films and TV. Reagan watched and re-watched Moscow Does Not believe in Tears before negotiating with Gorbachev.

Nigeria
has Africa's most impressive film and TV industry--watch stuff online: http://tvnolly.com/

Russian films: https://pen4pals.com/en/3-best-sites-free-watching-russian-movies-online-russian-subtitles https://thevore.com/russian-movies-online/

North Korean films: http://wwweb.jextensions.com/northkoreanfilms.com/ https://piie.com/blogs/north-korea-witness-transformation/north-korean-films-english-translation

Chinese: https://thevore.com/chinese-movies-online/

I'm just slapping these resources together; I'm sure others can give better links :)

Time to get to know the world not only from one's own POV.

What a terrific idea, although it turned out to be a frustrating exercise--and that alone is somewhat illuminating. I Googled "world opinion on Trump and North Korea" and got a bunch of US-based articles. The world's view filtered for Americans by Americans. Joy. :sarcasm

Even getting more specific with my search parameters didn't help much, but I did glean the following articles:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40903061 Trump administration's mixed messages on North Korea

Thanks, Cathleen:)

Concerning North Korea (which, for future searches, many in the world would call "DPRK")
As we can see in The People's Daily (China ), they seem more concerned with protecting what they see as their turf from the US http://en.people.cn/n3/2017/0811/c90883-9254167.html

While for example in The Daily Post (Ghana), local African politics and even gossip take precedence http://dailypost.ng/hot-news/

The most concerned by everything should, by rights, be South Korea (Republic of Korea), but are doing their best to keep a stiff upper lip and be dignified about it.
The Korean Herald:http://www.koreaherald.com/
The Korea Times: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www2/index.asp

On the Russian front:

TASS (the Russian Reuters) seem to care more about the Ukraine http://tass.com/world

Russia Today claims China will stop any preemptive strike on N Korea but will remain neutral if N Korea starts anything https://www.rt.com/news/399310-china-prevent-us-strike-nkorea/

While the good ole Pravda http://www.pravdareport.com/ which seems to be affiliated with the Russian communists (http://cprf.ru/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_the_Russian_Federation ), judging by the old-school language, views events through the filter of an imperialist fascist plot against the people's republic of Korea.

On the generic pop culture front:

Trailer for this summer's Chinese blockbuster "Wolf Warriors II" https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2017/aug/08/watch-the-trailer-for-wolf-warriors-2-video "Wu Jing as action hero Leng Feng, who finds himself in an unnamed African country trying to live a peaceful life, only to be forced to return to his old ways as a soldier"

From South Africa and further north in Africa. US news is often only reported in any depth if it relates to withdrawal of aid funding or military threats against African countries. This isn't lack of interest but because CNN, the BBC and until recently Al Jazeera are found on most TV stations and social media outlets.

Since 80% of UK news outlets are owned by the same devil who controls Fox News, the media is fairly bleak in the UK.

Conservatives really don't have a leg to stand on re accusations of liberal media bias in the UK.

For all that, on this side I'd recommend the following for a broad grasp of news here;

-- the Telegraph (rightwing, but and NOT Murdoch)
-- the Spectator (rightwing, opinionated)
-- Private Eye (true non-partisan, sub only)
-- Guardian/Observer, particularly John Crace (left of central)
-- Independent (left leaning)
-- the Times (right of central, Murdoch tho)
-- Financial Times (right leaning)
-- BBC (generally nonpartisan)

I must be half-asleep or under-caffeinated this morning. Forgot the satiric website started by Sean Jacobs that all of us across southern Africa read most days of the week. Great on local elections (Kenya), cultural debates, African film, new diaspora writers etc. The title obviously ironic for anyone who doesn't recall Sarah Palin.

Africa is a Country
