Dear Members,

Hi my name is Carlton Reid. I joined yesterday to find a poetry critique group.I am currently at the two-year college NVCC and will transfer to a four year by either summer fall 2018 or spring 2019. I am nineteen years old, and I have been seriously writing for almost four years. I became serious about writing after a teacher took the time to Skype me in their free time and teach me how to really make an outline. Before that moment, writing was a huge, daunting chore. I started out writing ten minutes a day, and that slowly turned into writing novels. But, that was not a fit for me (not yet at least). It wasn't until the end of my spring 2017 semester that I became enamored with poetry. To learn more, I checked out "Next Word, Better Word the craft of writing poetry" from the NVCC library. I got half way through the book my first check out. Now I am currently on my second checkout. My goal is to finish the book.

Sincerely,
Carlton Reid

Hi, Carlton!

We have a poetry critique area here, which I frequent. It's password-protected (password: citrus) so that people can post poems without endangering their first-publication rights. The stickies in the poetry area (and at the top of every board) are your friend. As with any critique area, reading generously and critiquing on more pieces than one posts helps keep the jalopy going.

I, too, started creative writing by attempting a novel, then turned toward poetry. Haven't seen the book you're reading, but I'll probably go look it up now...

Hope to see you around!

Anna

Anna,
It's cool to know that you got into poetry in a similar fashion. Thank you for the advice and info, and I will be sure to critique more than I post.

Hi Carlton! I developed an appreciation for poetry in high school because of my creative writing and AP literature teachers. It's always so good to see educators out there making positive impacts in their students lives.
