Getting Back Into Writing

Hello there,

I'm trying to get back into writing after a long break and a lot of writer's block. At the moment I'm working on a few cozy mystery ideas. I work as a copy editor and proofreader, so I spend a lot of time reading and critiquing other people's writing. It can mean it's difficult to find time to work on my own stuff. I hope that joining this forum will help motivate me to stick with a project (my biggest issue is hopping around from one thing to the next and losing interest before something is complete).

Great to meet you!

I know the feeling about hopping from one project to the next. I've started several novel manuscripts, but finally finished my first earlier this year.

Now I'm procrastinating badly with the revisions.

You sound like a whole bunch of other folks here except you've got one up on a lot of us due to your proofreading background. Hang in there!
I would like to suggest you find a project that really excites you and the research you do is fun for you, too. A cozy mystery sounds great -- you can choose any setting you want, the odder the better.

I found writing was like learning to ride a bicycle. I fell and crashed and cursed for a long time until one day I didn't and then I kept going and going and going.
Hang on, and hang in there.

Hi enemchick and welcome. As somebody who does a lot of editing and proofreading, I find that it is important to remember I can't create and analyse at the same time. The skills involved (and energies!) use different parts of the mind, so I try to decompress before switching over.

Welcome. Yes, it is tough to stay focused when working on multiple projects. Good luck!

Greetings! I know the struggles of writers block all too well (as I'm sure many, many of us do). I always end up cleaning or going on walks when I'm struggling. Menial tasks that let the mind wander usually help me get unstuck with ideas. Good luck!

Hi,

I can relate to your writer's block type scenario, though in my case it was more of an "anything creative block". Thankfully I feel like I have got my mojo back lately and I'm loving it! I'm glad you're getting yours back too.

:welcome: enemchick! Getting started again after a prolonged period of block or just frustration is hard, but I know you can do it! Best of luck.

Welcome! My day job is technical writing - I also spend a lot of time thinking critically about writing (my own and my team's) so I know what you mean about not having much time or energy left over for working on one's own projects.

Hey there, welcome to AWW!

I slush read for two journals as well as trying to maintain a job, so I know how difficult it is to sometimes find the creative spark within you. Luckily, you're not alone in this and everyone is here to support each other on the writing journey.
