I've been reading Bleak House and while I didn't get into it a lot at first, it's really coming together. As usual, I don't always love Dickens' openings but his stories really get interesting the further along I read. Anyway, at the end of chapter 42, a villainous character Mr. Tulkinghorn sees a painting featuring an arrow-wielding Roman on the ceiling. Now this is to foreshadow his later demise. This is classic foreshadowing and is not very obvious which makes it effective. I pretty much missed it but I've been peaking at the Cliff's notes as I go through it and I've found that doing this reinforces so many lessons and with Mr. Dickens there are so many lessons to learn. He was quite a craftsman.

Anyone else have some good examples of foreshadowing? Any thoughts?

I can't think of any immediate examples, but J K Rowling is pretty good at foreshadowing. Perhaps not coincidentally, Dickens is one of her favorite writers.

I love Dickens. His characters remain with you long after the story is over.

So very true. Scrooge has pretty much been with me my whole life. And poor Jo in this one is quite memorable as is Esther.
