Silence hurts. The total absence of noise is like a weight in your head. I've felt it a couple of times, seconds after a bomb has gone off. That split second between the explosion and glass exploding and sirens going off and people crying... It's a truly terrible noise.
I heard it once. Driving north to San Francisco, climbing an endless mountain, through a mist, until I found myself sitting on top of a cloud. I'll never forget it. Since then it's been nothing but din.
It's a roar if you're waiting for sound, a buzz if you're regretting the last sound, and, a hum if you're realizing you'll never hear that sound again.
I think that 'roar' of silence especially is very powerful. Really brings to mind that scene in Interstellar where the main character's waiting for the ship to take-off. Well, for me at least.
