Good morning everyone!
My name is Tyler Humphries and I've just recently found this website. I've been writing for several years now, but "peaked" once I was in the Marine Corps. I'm now back in the civilian world working a good job and working on my college degree online. Writing has always been my passion and I feel like it's my calling; maybe not my career, but certainly it's something I was meant to do.
What I write
Most (95%) of my books take place in the Dominia Galaxy. I have a medieval series, Colonial era series, modern day war series, modern day vigilante/superhero series (my current project), and alien invasion series, and lastly a superhero series. I'm also planning an apocalyptic zombie/rage virus type series, but that doesn't take place in Dominia. That takes place here in the Milky Way.
Most of my books range from 40,000 - 60,000 words right now; I would like to expand that and be able to improve my ettiquite and writing style.
My Goals
When it comes to this forum, I have a few goals.
1. To learn. I want to learn from fellow authors in order to improve my writing style and language. I have a major problem with the word "as" and "when" as a conjunction. For example, I use "The boy ran to the car as his mother honked" or "He ran to the front door while swinging his Halloween basket wildly." In Book 1 of the superhero series (45,000 words), I have the world "as" 400 times. Its something I need improvement on.
Another issue I have with my superhero series is that nothing is original. I have a lot of questions about legal issues regarding names (such as the Guardian, which I would love to use for a character but Marvel, DC, and even the game Destiny have already coined that). So I'd really like to learn what's legal and what's illegal in writing regarding names, superpowers, origin stories, and such.
2. To help. I'm also knowledgeable, and I want to help other authors succeed, because that's only fair that I return the favor.

and particularly recommend the "sticky" posts you'll see at the top of each forum. They have a lot of nuts-and-bolts info that it sounds like you're looking for.

The range of your writing boggles my mind. I'm lucky to focus on one thing at a time. I'm working on a novel that involves a couple of Marines in WW II and the aftermath of the battle of Tarawa. And, no surprise, Semper Fi is uttered in it.
