I'm a baking disaster. It's hereditary. My mum can murder a cake as well.

Christmas is decidedly secular in our family (it helps half of us are Jewish...), although last year I did end up in church for the first time in about 20 years. I didn't even burst into flames. It's all about the giving. And receiving. Mostly the receiving.

I think having it as a family celebration is good. I mean, we see our families every Friday night, but I know most people don't. Anything to get together and touch base (and eat).

I love baking. Definitely genetic. Though my sister didn't get the gene.

eta. ok, that's disconcerting. I heard banging and assumed he was working on the other side. Turns out, he's actually on MY side. He must have jumped the fence. Feels kinda rude.

Can't disagree.

I'm not at all religious (I'm a happy atheist), but our festivals have little if nothing to do with god and 'religion'. They're generally about family (And food. Lots and lots of food) and remembering historical events.

I think all celebration things should be about family... with the occasional historical remembrance thrown in. :)

Ha! Yeah, going to the bathroom is a sure fire way to get that phone call you're waiting for.

Ah, but is the church still standing? *G*

There is fence action! From the other side, but action! Seems promising!

Woo hoo!

I do like to bake. I'm not genius at it, but I enjoy it. I don't really enjoy cooking, though.

That seems rather rude to just enter your yard without your knowledge or permission. Granted, it was discussed that he was coming back to fix the fence, so there's tacit permission. But dude, how about announcing that you're there?

You know what almost annoys me most? I got dressed! Like, in proper clothes (as opposed to my "at home alone and baking trakkie dak ensemble") because I thought I'd have to interact with another human person today. Sigh.

Aww, man! That's so annoying. So now you either have to change into your baking clothes - or take the chance on getting your 'proper' clothes all dirty from the baking.

Yay! I'm back! My stupid laptop decided to freeze then run three separate updates. That's an hour I'll never get back. Now I need to reopen all my bloody documents.

I got straight into my comfy clothes, Jay. :) Easy call there. I have one loaf of almond bread in the oven, now I have to go prep the second. I might actually have to make three (I just phoned my MIL to see how many people she's expecting for her lunch. "Only" 40-45 this year!!!)

Hmmm. So what you are saying is that Mr. BF is also an alien zebra?

All that baking sounds mouth watering BF! I go through baking fits. I bake, I have a fit. When I am in the mood to bake it's really good. When I'm not, it's still good (most of the time).

Another sweltering day here in northern Florida, with temperatures near thirty C. Still no electricity, so no A/C, and no running water. So, flushing the toilets with what we filled in the bath tubs. And we caught some additional rainwater to use for things like rinsing hands and such.

Woke up this morning to the generator running out of gas. Hopefully that doesn't happen tomorrow. I think we filled it later today.
Yay, we have a dr. Appt with the referral doctor. After I snarled at the Dr Lincoln's office, they called and arranged the appointment for us. 8am on Sept 27. I really hope we have power by then. Clay Electric (thankfully we aren't part of Florida Power) has restored close to 100,000 customers power. There are another 57,000 or so to go. Putting a throw pillow in the freezer can do a lot to help cool you off. So can a towel. Just have to be careful to let it fully dry before going back in otherwise it gets stiff. A damp towel would also be killer, but then, it's damp.

Anyway. Nothing quite like typing by the sound of the generator in almost absolute pitch dark. The only illimuniation coming from the screen of my iPad.

G'night all! I'm off to the sweat lodge known as the inside of the house.

Boo for laptop freezing and updating. I hate having to restart and then reopen all my documents.

Good plan to get straight into your comfy clothes. Woo hoo! Way to go on the baking progress.

Holy Hannah! That's a LOT of people for lunch!

Yikes. That doesn't sound like you're having much fun at all, Bry. Hope they get your power restored very soon! :Hug2: Yay for getting a relatively fast appt with the specialist.

G'night, Bry. I hope the weather cools down a bit and/or the power comes back on so you can be comfy.

Oh, 40-45 is relatively small for my MIL. Last year, I think there were 60-odd. She's so chill about it, though. Doesn't blink at catering for so many.

Our problem is the sheer quantity of food over those few days. Lunch won't finish till 5pm or so, then that night we have dinner at my aunty's at 6:30pm (I'm talking ~ 7 courses, and she takes it personally if we don't eat). The process is repeated the next day.

Man, Bryan, I hope you get your power back really soon. That sounds no fun at all.

Wow. That's incredible. I'd go bonkers if I had to cook for that many.

Oh wow! Sounds like it's non-stop eating. I couldn't do it.

Hey, Jay. I did, eventually. Just got back from taking first kid to school, now have to take the second. My life is one excitement after another.

How's your day been?

:e2thud:

:hi: WE HAVE POWER! The air conditioning feels soooooooooo good. I have touched base with friends who still do not have power, and offered our generator (provided our power continues to stay on)

Just in time too. We all hit "the wall" today. Pillows and towels in the freezer help to cool things down for a time (it was how I got to sleep last night ... 3 different times).

Now I'm tired, achy, and going to shower in a few minutes.

Good evening, reppers!

Glad to hear the power's back on, Bryan.

I wish today was Friday. I'm worn out and would really enjoy a break, but that won't happen. I also have to work Saturday again.

*sigh*. It is so peaceful without that generator running. Though after 4 days of almost pitch black, the geckos are going to get fat with all the bugs they are eating.

As soon as it cooled off (and I'm talking like 27C ) we were all out like a light.

Hopefully a good night's sleep will rejuvenate you V. If not, coffee.

Sorry about Doris Lil :( But glad that hasn't stopped you from being the Mother taxi service and advice emporium.

:hi: Jaymz and BF! (And to Mr BF and Mr C too)

I'm off to wordz or play games. I haven't decided which. I will probably wind up lurking here. Or reading.
