ALDI has house brands. Lidl has, well, see for yourself.

Some complain that ALDI's house brands are deceptively close in appearance to national brands. Lidl seems to have gone way in the other direction. Pretty stark, eh? Can't you already hear snooty dinner guests whispering behind your back about how you've fallen on hard times? Lidl has a few premium brands like Italiamo, similar to ALDI's step-up brand Specially Selected.

Hey, if it's good stuff, I don't care. Might have to wait a while to compare ALDI to Lidl here in Sunny SoCal. No sign that we're even on Lidl's radar, though their next expansion includes Texas, putting them two states away from Sunny CA.

Eyes on the horizon, SoCal shoppers!

I used to shop frequently at a Lidl when I lived in Finland. It's very similar to Aldi--not much selection, mostly off-brands, but you occasionally get really good deals.

Here in Sunny SoCal, the home of the original sprawling supermarket away from downtown on its own parking lot, some reviews of ALDI describe it as a claustrophobic alternate universe of strange brands. Lidl's no-name labeling of everyday essentials will probably give some of these people a stroke.;)

Those Lidl packages are downright decadent and decorative compared to the Generic packaging that was popular for a while in the 70s-80s. See, for instance:

http://historysdumpster.blogspot.com/2012/08/generic-products-of-80s.html

http://gbnfgroceries.blogspot.com/2014/01/from-misc-foods-aisle-generic-brands.html

I remember that stuff. I think that first blog has its dates wrong because I know my family was buying plain-black-text-on-white-cardboard "generic" food in the mid-1970s, not the early '80s.

I remember it as pretty foul. The "generic" oat rings cereal tasted nothing like Cheerios (although "generic" wheat puffs were no worse than regular unflavored puffed wheat).

There were "generic" paperback books too, with similar black-and-white covers.

I have the SF and Romance ones; they're really closer to short novellas, and were very tongue-and-cheek.

Man, if you want NoName labelling, you're going to love the Superstore house brands.

It's actually called "No Name" and the plain black text on yellow packaging makes all food into food porn (because it reminds me of the old ads that your product/subscription will arrive in plain unmarked packaging) lol

Can we talk about the fact that they said "Fromidable" in the Canadian package of cheese thingies? Because that's actually a glorious pun if you know French.
