Thread: Scribbled in a Painter's Notebook:

  1. #1

    Scribbled in a Painter's Notebook:

    The truth that
    through her eyes
    consumed the room
    left the chattering
    flatterers dancing,
    dumbly shaking to
    the music of her making.

    But it was that smile,
so full of wile and wonder,
    like the flash that
    brings the thunder,
    that kissed the
    canvas last.

Okay, so there's this weird thing about me. I don't think in pictures, almost at all. When I read or write or remember, there's very little in the way of visuals in my mind. There's a sense that feels more akin to hearing + invention. And I can force an image if needs be, but it's usually short-lived and not in great clear focus. (Now I do dream in pictures.)

Anyway, this one rings a bit like that sense seems to me. These words would be the way it would feel in my head to be inspired to painting (if I wasn't hopeless in the visual arts.)

I wonder (and you may know) are there many painter-poets?

there are many, though i am certainly not one... my father is a painter, my wife is a painter, one of my children is a digital artist, so i have been surrounded by them throughout my life and painters appear frequently in my work.

but yes, elizabeth bishop, william blake, ee cummings, to name but a few.

as an aside, jamie. thank you for taking the time to read and provide lovely comments on this and the dream poem.

it means a lot to me, and the forum has been mighty quiet lately.

I really, really felt this one. Thanks for sharing it, Will. Your poetry typically evokes one of two responses from me. This one falls into the inspirational category and now I want to create.

(Jamie, I should have known that Haskins was behind that Blake post...)
