I'm pretty behind on this, but I needed some time after not completing any of my April goals to lick my wounds. I've made some more practical goals this month:

1. Finish 1 short story
2. Read 1 book
3. Edit Hesse story (if critique comes back)
4. Apply for Masterclass
5. Spend 1 hour working on Viable Paradise application

Small goals, but ones I can get done and I can also add more. I want to be realistic and feel accomplished month's end, since I need a writing win.

I have a lot of goals this month. Here are the most important ones:

  • Finish formatting client books in eBook and PB format (5 total)
  • Finish 3-5 sample chapters for MA Series.
  • Get the ball rolling on Ghostslayer series, which is now under contract.
  • Format and upload paperback for Sally Sleuth.
  • Finish critique for a client.
  • Finish client edit.
  • Write 4 short stories (One Story A Week, been doing this since January).
  • Edit short story I wrote for an anthology.
  • Start editing Allegro Academy (I've been saying this for months).
  • Finish writing Snoebels, Cat Detective.
  • Edit Snoebels, Cat Detective.

If I can, I also want to work on the WIP I started in January. I have so many things on my plate. I usually love being busy but I'm looking forward to a break.

Last week, I accomplished:
  • Finalized things with publisher MA Series, wrote 2 sample chapters (in need of editing).
  • Worked on storyline MA Series, Book 1 (unnamed).
  • Formatted client books, and sent them for approval.
  • Write 1 short story for One Story A Week.

This week's goals are:
  • Finish reviews for Ind'Tale Magazine and send them to review coordinator.
  • Finish formatting manuscripts and send them back to publisher.
  • Edit short story for anthology.
  • Finish client edit #1.
  • Finish client edit #3.
  • Write at least 3 sample chapters in MA Series.
  • Write 10k in my WIP for May.
  • Write one short story for A Short Story A Week.

And to break it down even more (because I love lists, lists are life), today's goals:
  • Finish writing reviews Ind'Tale Magazine and sned them to review coordinator.
  • Finish formatting manuscripts and send them to publisher.
  • Finish client edit #1.
  • Add page to my blog about my upcoming book.
  • Write Monday Musings blog post.
  • Edit short story for anthology.
  • Write out outline for MA Series, Book 1.

May Goals:
  • Clean my office.
    • Making a little bit of progress by trying to sort through at least a few small things a day. The pile in the centre of the room is growing, however.
  • Continue running.
    • Got back up to +30 mins and 5K. I should be ready for the 5K this weekend.
  • Finish formatting a manual.
    • Made progress. We're changing a few things around now, though, so not quite done.
  • Make some webpage updates.
    • Forgot about this one. Nope.
  • Do a writing exercise (at least flash length) every day.
    • Yes! So far, I've hit every day.
Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle (focus on getting to bed earlier).
    • Progress here, too. I've been getting off the computer (and usually into bed) before 11. My wake up time is now between 6:30 and 7:00 am, though, so I still need to walk it back a touch more.
  • Write 1K words a day (currently at 18/52 weeks).

Well, the thing that I thought would keep me unable to write until the middle of the month has ended early. So just got to wrap up a few loose ends and then I will have time again.

But this morning I worked out a writing schedule, and it's made me feel good about my progress. Feeling hopeful! (and not so stressed out)

My goals are kicking ME!!! it's all like, "hey! look over there, what's that!?" And then I do and my butt receives a great and mighty kick that gets me nowhere and then I'm just sad and stuff!! :( I need some positive butt-kicking examples, stat!

Damoclian, you've been kicking butt in Word Wars! :)

My update: I'm at just shy of 21,000 words for the month. I'm probably not going to finish the whole first draft like I wanted (I'm projecting 75,000 words now), but I'll come close.

Is it too late to join? I only just discovered this was a thing. A totally awesome thing. :) It's so motivating to see other people making progress.

For me:
1. Write 10,000 on Fantasy Romance (at 12,500 words as of tonight)
2. Publish 1 blog post every Monday
3. Don't read more than 3 books (more than that, and I know I'm just procrastinating instead of writing . . .)

Small goals because May is my absolute worst month in my day job, but hoping that by putting real goals into the ether, I will at least not abandon writing completely when things get tough.

Welcome, SK Stark! So good to have so many new members joining us!

I did marginally better on my goals this past week. Actually wrote a bit (although still less than I'd hoped), finished Cascadia's Fault and started another book (Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian - I will probably need a nice, fun Discworld book STAT after I finish that) and read the next three of my Guardian articles.

For my "explore NYC" goal, I walked the city's High Line - a former West side elevated railway that's been landscaped and gentrified. It was crowded and too close to too many buildings, but at least it got me out of my Midtown rut and down to the West Village, where I had a nice lunch and strolled around a bit before walking back to my apartment via 8th Avenue.

This week is going to be busier than usual. My husband is visiting to celebrate both our anniversary and my birthday, so we'll be treating ourselves to a big steak dinner on Monday and no doubt rambling around together on Monday and Tuesday. Once he goes back home, I have to start prepping to vacate this sublet temporarily (the owner needs to use it for 17 days) and move to a friend's place four blocks away. It's an aggravation, but at least I'll save on my May/June rent. The next couple of weeks will also be the run-up to the Tony Awards (my show is nominated for four), with the additional pressures associated with that. As a standby/swing, I doubt I'll be going on again any time soon, but after the June 11th awards all bets are off.

1. Complete revision/rewrite of Book #4 - currently at 54,341
2. Explore NYC with at least two jaunts to places I've never been - 1 of 2
3. Read five books - 2 of 5
4. Write at least one blog post
5. Continue reading at least three "My Writing Day" essays from The Guardian series per week - 2 of 4
6. Submit a short story to at least one market

What? Other people are doing this as well?! I really need to pay more attention...

My goal this May is to finish the first draft of my current book! I currently have 11,281 words written, so I really needa get my butt in gear.

I hit 25,000 words today!

80,000 may have been a teensy bit unrealistic for me. At this point, I'll be satisfied with the regular ol' NaNo goal of 50,000. I'm not sure I can go faster than this without getting into bonkers vomiting-words-onto-the-page territory. But that's part of what I wanted to find out this month! Now I know I can write a pretty darn clean first draft at NaNo pace.
