Heh--I was in my early teens, had just finished LOTR for the first time and was sooooo excited to read The Sword of Shannara...and then read it and could barely contain my righteous outrage at what an enormous rip-off it felt like to me. I don't even remember the storyline, but I do remember how angry I was.

I love Gentleman Bastard series. Too bad you couldn't enjoy it.

Second this. It's like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. You keep with it because it's so rich, though it kind of feels like it's going nowhere, and suddenly BAM, hooked. It's v.v. good. Scott Lynch is marvelous.
