If you were writing about, say, the Miss America 2016 pageant, would you italicize Miss America 2016?

Well, TV shows are italicized, so if you're referring to it on TV, would you still not italicize it?

If you're referring to the broadcast show's title, then yes, italicize. The titles of programs being broadcast are either italicized or put in double quotes, depending on house styles, which mostly lean strongly toward italics.
Examples:
Maryn missed Miss America 2016 when her cable went out.
Maryn missed the most recent episode of Bates Motel when her cable went out.

But if you are referring to the pageant itself, there's no reason to italicize it.
Examples:
Since she had no talent to display, Maryn was not a contender in the Miss American 2016 pageant.
Maryn suspected she would not win the Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes, either.

Maryn, never a contender
