What are some diseases my character could die from in the 1950s?

Er, this post is six months old and the original poster seems to be long gone...

I suspect a lot of folks died of "heart disease" without knowing at that time if it was something like a staph infection within the valves, a random arterial blowout (John Ritter), long Q-T, etc....

All respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and asthma were killer diseases then
