So I took a creative writing course with a published author in high school and she said there was some sort of software that her agent set her up with for her subsequent books (the ones after her debut) and this was something like a type of document (as in or word or excel) where you could write in it and it was the size of a regular page, any authors know what I am talking about??? I figure I could buy it online?

Anyone know about this?

- thx

(If you can think of some software related to this you can mention it and also where to buy it)...

That could be almost anything, including MS Word, or Pages, or Mariner Write . . . or yes, Scrivener.

I'd try Googling the author to see if she's written about the software, or possibly, emailing her and reminding her of who you are.

Okay, that is probably what she is talking about... I'm about to look this up but can you explain to me exactly what scrivener is??? Does is it just help with the layout in terms of making it look like a book page or does it do other stuff too?

Scrivener is a specialised word-processor for "writing complicated documents". Ie novels or academic papers with lots of chapters and subchapters. The benefit of using it is that it gives a good holistic overview of a project. But in essence, it's like Microsoft Word.

I'm far from a pro, but right now, I'm using iA Writer Classic on Mac OSX. It has a great full-screen mode, plus what it calls Focus Mode where it greys out every line that isn't the sentence you're writing at that moment, making you focus on one sentence at a time. I was skeptical, but if you enjoy a good turn of phrase, it's an all right little piece of boffo.

Plus, if you're writing a screenplay, you can just copy and paste into Writer or any of the other free Fountain formatting apps.
