I am currently writing a short story and the characters refer to a fictional god. I've been using:

"...the God Beneath the Mountain..."

but now I'm not sure that's right, and have considered many variations of where the capitalisation should be. I don't want to give a name - despite knowing it would make the whole thing a lot easier. Any help greatly appreciated.

If it is a name or is used as a name, then use capitals. With Gods that can be difficult. Muslims call their God "Allah", but that God is the "God of Abraham", and that God introduced himself as "El Shaddai". By the rules, "Allah" would not be capitalized, except that it is used as a name (or in place of a name). If your God is called "the God Beneath the Mountain", then all of it, including the "the's", should be capitalized. If that God has another name, but everyone calls it "the God Beneath the Mountain", then it still should be capitalized.
