Helloooooo, August!

Even though some of us Campers are still gasping and wheezing from crossing (or trying to cross) the July finish line, it's time to state our goals for the new month.

I'm too brain-dead at the moment to think about mine (still bathing in the afterglow of finally finishing the rough draft of my WIP), but don't let that stop the rest of you. What are YOUR goals (writing, reading and other) for the month of August?

I guess I'll be first to post goals :) I've spent the last few months just trying to balance my life. For a while there work was taking too big a chunk of my life and I've been making room for my personal life to have more of a priority. I think it's at a better place now.

I've got a lot of goals this month.

GOALS:

1) In general, write 2,000 words a day.
2) Finish Book #1 rough draft (7k remaining). Right now it's just mostly fleshing things out and filling in blanks and a few occasional plot holes.
3) Figure out how to proceed with my YA book that stymied me during Camp. Then finalize the first 3 chapters.
4) Finish Book #2 rough draft (36k remaining).
5) Practice my languages that are getting rusty. I'm splitting it between 3 languages, but only doing about 30 minutes every other day, whether it's reading or watching a movie, or something.

This last month in Camp has been exhausting at times, but I'm aiming to keep on going full-steam this month. I've largely been splitting my time between job hunting and reading and writing, so whenever I get a job, my writing time will take a significant hit. In the meantime, I plan to get as much writing in as possible.

I am nearing a completed rough draft of my novel, but I've been having to rewrite entire sequences and swap in new ones in the first half, which is eating up a lot of my time. I'm bouncing back and forth between feeling awful about the entire work and really good about it, so I just need to get to where I have a complete draft to look at. Keeping that in mind, here are my goals:

1) Finish the rough draft of my book, or at least the vast majority of it, preferably before I go on vacation this Wednesday.
2) Once I get back this Sunday, hopefully refreshed, I'm going to turn it into a cohesive, refined second draft in 3-4 weeks of intensive editing and rewriting when needed. I've been very prolific even by my own standards lately, so I hope that's feasible.
3) Proofread it and then send it off to beta readers!
4) Find a new project to work on while I take at least a several week break from this manuscript and let my beta readers shred it.

After editing and worldbuilding and poetry in July, I'm back to ordinary novel drafting in August. Goal is to finish the draft this month, but since I don't know how long it's going to work out to be (I don't even have a finished outline), I'm tentatively setting a goal of 2k/day. And since I no longer have cabinmates to guilt me into writing, I heartily give you permission to kick me in the teeth if I slack off.

2. Use sprints to write
3. Finish. The. Novel....
4. Write 5-6 days a week

GOALS:

  • Finish a 105k beta read.
  • Read 5 books and hit my 50 book reading goal for the year.
  • FINISH DIVIDE
  • Write 20k.

These are roughly prioritised -- finishing my WIP is more important than wordcount this month. I just want this book done and out to early beta readers.

DAY 1:

1) In general, write 2,000 words a day. Nope. 300 words in 8 hours.
2) Finish Book #1 rough draft (7k remaining). Right now it's just mostly fleshing things out and filling in blanks and a few occasional plot holes. Nope. See #1
3) Figure out how to proceed with my YA book that stymied me during Camp. Then finalize the first 3 chapters. Progress! I THINK I've figured it out. And have completely edited the opening scene. It is DONE (the opening scene).
4) Finish Book #2 rough draft (36k remaining). Nope.
5) Practice my languages that are getting rusty. I'm splitting it between 3 languages, but only doing about 30 minutes every other day, whether it's reading or watching a movie, or something. On track.

I've put off stating my goals for the month because I'm waiting for a Really Big Shoe to drop, and if/when it does, it may introduce a whole new set of variables into the already convoluted equation that is my life. (It's all good stuff; don't worry.) Meanwhile, my acting work has dried up until November 1. This may be a blessing in disguise because, you know, Shoe. We'll see.

So, ignoring that giant sole-and-heel hanging overhead, here are my goals for August:

1) Do first editing pass on Book 3 in fantasy series (plot hole filling, etc.)
2) Do second editing pass on Book 3 (tightening and polishing)
3) Finish David McCullough's The Path Between the Seas
4) Read three additional books - 0 of 3
5) Choose (or write) a dirty song for a benefit revue later in the month
6) Write a blog post
7) Do some Wonderbook writing exercises - 0 of 3
8) Take at least one walk of at least one mile at least once a week - 1 of 4
9) Take a class, attend a lecture or something of that ilk
10) Catalog, photograph and package up clothing for a charitable donation
11) Weed, mulch and generally give my fig tree some TLC

Onward! ::glances overhead at Shoe::

Yay, happy to be back here this month.

  • Finish Beta read
  • Redo scene list with the new changes to the idea in plotting
  • Read travel guide for my trip at the end of Sept
  • Finish my NYCC costumes
  • Finish my dad's NYCC costumes
  • Edit when my Betas come in
  • *added* and enter Pitch Wars, because I know people who are bad influences :tongue

I have so few writing things to do. I am a bit between projects at the moment. It's uncomfortable.

Report for the end of August's Week 2:

1) Do first editing pass on Book 3 in fantasy series (plot hole filling, etc.) - up to Chapter Six (other writing stuff took priority this week - see About the Shoe below)
2) Do second editing pass on Book 3 (tightening and polishing)
3) Finish David McCullough's The Path Between the Seas - continuing)
4) Read three additional books - 0 of 3
5) Choose (or write) a dirty song for a benefit revue later in the month - halfway through writing
6) Write a blog post
7) Do some Wonderbook writing exercises - 0 of 3
8) Take at least one walk of at least one mile at least once a week - 2 of 4

11) Weed, mulch and generally give my fig tree some TLC DONE

About the Shoe: it has dropped. I will be able to give more particulars in a week or so when everything's official, but suffice it for now to say that I have accepted an offer for the first two books in my fantasy series. I spent most of the week doing contract things and then filling out paperwork (writing back cover copy is almost as hard as writing queries - just sayin'). I'll be hollering from the rooftops in the appropriate AW forums when Official Word is released, but for now my emotions are all over the place - I'm happy, anxious, disbelieving but mostly relieved that after two years of searching, my series finally has a home. :e2thud:

YAY, MRSMIG! CONGRATS! :partyguy:

DAY 15:

1) In general, write 2,000 words a day. Haha, not even close.
2) Finish Book #1 rough draft (7k remaining). Right now it's just mostly fleshing things out and filling in blanks and a few occasional plot holes. Slowly, but there is progress. It's slow at this stage of the game, trying to tie everything up.
3) Figure out how to proceed with my YA book that stymied me during Camp. Then finalize the first 3 chapters. Stuck on how I want to proceed with the story with regards to the pace.
4) Finish Book #2 rough draft (36k remaining). Nope.
5) Practice my languages that are getting rusty. I'm splitting it between 3 languages, but only doing about 30 minutes every other day, whether it's reading or watching a movie, or something. Missed a couple days. Hope to make it up today.

I've been avoiding this, but setting goals seems like a good idea.

1. Two blog posts a week (4 more for the month)
2. Hit 80k on the current writing project (25k to go)
3. Finish the books I'm supposed to be beta-ing (Two of them, both partially complete)
4. Pack my stuff for grad school (If by packed, you mean dump everything I own on my bedroom floor, I'm really going for the gold right now)

Only one week left in the month! Where has the time gone?

Didn't get nearly as much accomplished this week as I'd hoped. I'm finding that I've been simultaneously doing the plot-hole filling and the tightening/polishing passes on Book 3, so I've gone ahead and combined the two categories.

I finished Halldor Laxness' Independent People this week. It was a rough go - I wanted to read something by an Icelandic author and Laxness is one of the most famous - but the style was a little dated and the story very bleak. There were some beautiful passages, though. I did enough exercises to complete my Wonderbook goal but I'm finding the book to be not terribly helpful. It's certainly a beautiful book, but the layout is distracting at times and there aren't nearly as many exercises as I'd hoped (that it's aimed at a younger audience may be part of the problem). I will probably put it aside now.

I'd hoped to attend an Audubon lecture/guided walk on Sunday, but when I arrived at the location bright and early I discovered that I'd gotten the date wrong - it was the day before. I went for a regular ol' walk instead. Don't know if I can find another lecture to attend before the month ends, but I'll try. I think I'll be able to finish goal #9 tonight while I watch the Olympics closing ceremonies.

1) Do editing pass on Book 3 in fantasy series - up to Chapter Eight
2) Finish David McCullough's The Path Between the Seas - continuing
3) Read three additional books - 1 of 3
4) Choose (or write) a dirty song for a benefit revue later in the month - DONE
5) Write a blog post
6) Do some Wonderbook writing exercises - DONE
7) Take at least one walk of at least one mile at least once a week - 3 of 4
8) Take a class, attend a lecture or something of that ilk
9) Catalog, photograph and package up clothing for a charitable donation
10) Weed, mulch and generally give my fig tree some TLC DONE

Goals for August:

1.) Write 20,000 words. Done!
2.) Go to France OR to the Lake District. Might be France, and early September. I'm disappointed that we didn't get to go to the Lake District, and even though I go out for a long walk almost every day, I still have cabin fever.
3.) Make a meal plan. Uhhhhh...

Yeeeps, yes, this month's really moving fast!
