I’m going away for a week’s holiday to visit relatives and thought I would reach out to you guys for any recommendations on stories or novels set on remote islands or involving isolated communities. Short stories or novels welcome! If it’s a bit too niche then don’t be afraid to branch out – but I think I’m looking for small group, personal horror rather that end of the world scenarios.

NOTE: The place I’m headed isn’t that remote – and the people will be lovely – but I like my dark fiction and so thought I would reach out for help.

Terrify me. Two points for each recommendation.

Thanks! Good shout - I've already read Hill House but it's the kind of thing I'm shooting for! Thanks again. 2 points.

First book that came to mind is Lord of the Flies.

Good shout Chompers - I read it for my GCSE years ago. I think it might be time for a re-reading.

You can read Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe for the prototype of that kind of story. It's not horror by mainstream definition, but it does have horror elements, and it is indeed set on an island.
