We are not Welsh for where we come from

We are Welsh—in our veins flows ancient myth;
history as old as the mountains stand—
poetic through industrial monoliths
grafted on valleys and volatile land.

We are Welsh—no strangers to austerity;
suppressed behind anthracite's dank midnight—
brackish as the waves on Ogmore beach,
our spirit holds in song a future light.

We are Welsh—by city, village, or town;
a people burdened that shares the cost—
forgers, composers, and artisans,
whether our roots are Cymric or not.

We are Welsh through life and labour as one—
Welsh because Wales is where we belong.
