At this point, any discussion of the issue can move society as a whole closer to a solution, or at least decrease the tolerance of its persistence.
The civil rights movement of the 1960s had heroes who took positive action, often at the risk of their life. But their ultimate goal was to force society as a whole to look at racism and say, "This isn't right. It's the way things have always been, but it can't continue." Until that sinks in to everyone, the battle isn't done. And if we hear our friends say it, we're more likely to believe it ourselves.
